Chapter Twenty-One

Averie’s eyes fell to the gaudy, pink box he held in his hands. She wasn’t sure how long she had stared in confusion and shock at his appearance but knew it was long enough for Silas to clear his throat. “Are you going to let me in?” Silas leaned in to whisper.

“What are you doing here?” she whispered back.

“I invited him for breakfast. Good morning, Silas,” Karen confessed as she came to stand beside Averie.

“Good morning, Mrs. Hale.” Silas flashed his dazzling smile.

“I figured if you two were sneaking around, maybe it would make things easier if I just had him over so I could get to know him a little better. Oh, and you brought donuts! Give me those and you come on in.” Taking the donuts from his hands, Karen made her way back toward the kitchen.

Averie stood locked in place as she watched the exchange between them. As her mind fought to catch up with the sudden switch in her morning, Silas had stepped closer, his hands moving to her waist as he forced her to take a step back.

“Deep breath, Averie, it’s only breakfast.” Silas chuckled as he followed Karen.

Averie shut the door with a shake of her head. “‘It’s only breakfast Averie,’“ she mocked trailing behind. “Yeah, well it’s only my foot up your ass for not warning me,” she mumbled. Averie stood for a minute deciding if she wanted to follow him to the kitchen, or just run out the door and never come back. Both options had their own upside, but eventually she let this fantasy go and decided that dying of embarrassment was at least a quicker option.

“No, she did not!” Silas’s booming laughter had Averie flinching at the potential stories her mother was currently sharing.

“She did! She would collect them and put them in her closet, then burst into tears when she realized they had died,” Karen exclaimed, wiping tears from her eyes.

Averie groaned as she caught the end of her mother’s story. She stepped into the kitchen and saw Silas leaning over the breakfast bar, just as she had done before his arrival, a steaming cup nestled between his hands and a chocolate donut half eaten on the napkin beside him.

Karen had reclaimed her normal seat, which put her directly in front of Silas. Her cheeks were slightly rosy from her laughter, and she was dabbing at her face with one of the napkins in an attempt to collect the fallen tears. Averie located the pink box nestled beside her mother. Stepping forward she pulled out a chocolate-covered, custard-filled, doughnut and took a large bite.

“So you tried to save the ladybugs, huh?” Silas asked, his eyes twinkling.

Averie choked at his words. Clutching her chest, she coughed, attempting to clear her throat. “I was six, and Thane told me that birds were going to eat them.”
