A bang came at the door to the room where Del was sleeping. She groggily reached from her bunk, turned the handle of the door, and opened it a crack.
âWhat is it?â she said.
âWowâyou look terrible,â said Sam, observing her completely disheveled hair. âI think youâd better get upâweâve let you sleep long enough.â
âIs it late?â Del mumbled.
âUh⦠yeah. Youâve been asleep for hours.â
âWhy didnât you wake me up?â
âCrimson said to let you sleep.â
âThat was dumb. Give me a sec.â
Del closed the door, put on her sweater, flattened her hair a bit with her hands, and emerged into the main hallway of the ship.
âOkay, Iâm ready.â
âWhatâs that?â Sam asked.
Del was holding the fuzzy creature in her hand. It was purple, but at Samâs voice, it began turning red.
âThis was in my room last night,â Del said. âLook, it changes color. I can make it change to purple by being nice to it. Cool, huh?â
âI guess so,â said Sam. He wasnât much for pets.
Together, Sam and Del headed up to the main deck of the boat. The sun shone brightly overhead, and it took Del a few seconds to adjust to the light. Crimson, Phil, and Guy were sitting together, talking and laughing away. Hollow was up at the shipâs wheel with a short telescope in his hand. Delâs eyes followed the outstretched sail from bottom to top to see Egreck perched atop of the mast in the crowâs nest with a much larger telescope. She looked around and realized that there was no land in sight.
âWhere are we?â Del asked.
âWhile you four were sleeping, we sailed along the river, leaving the forest behind,â Crimson explained.
âWe were just moving from the river to this lake when I got up,â said Sam. âThat was about two hours ago I would guess.â
âHey, whatâs that thing?â Phil said, seeing the fuzzy creature.
âI wondered where youâd gotten to,â said Crimson, talking to the creature in Delâs arms. âShe seems to have taken a liking to you, Del, judging by her color.â
âItâs a she?â Del asked.
âYes,â Crimson replied. âHer name is Tabby. Sheâs a winx.â
âShe changes color,â Del said.
âHer color will start by matching how you feel toward her and then will display how she feels. Purple is when she really likes something. She really likes you. She usually starts by mimicking sounds. Not in words, but in her own way. Then sheâll start responding to you.â
âYeahâthat happened last night,â Del said. âIt was like we could talk to each other. Can she understand what Iâm saying?â
âNot exactly, but she can quickly understand your mood and your feelings,â said Crimson. âAll winxes can.â
âSheâs pretty awesome,â said Del. âIs she yours?â
âWinxes donât belong to anyone,â Crimson said. âThey arenât pets, but lumens help take care of them. We wouldnât usually have one on a boat, but Tabby was particularly attached to Verdi, so we made an exception. Seems like sheâs made a new friend, though. Donât worry, Del. Verdi wonât mind.â
âVerdi, really?â said Guy. âDoesnât seem like the type to like something so⦠fuzzy.
