A bang came at the door to the room where Del was sleeping. She groggily reached from her bunk, turned the handle of the door, and opened it a crack.

“What is it?” she said.

“Wow—you look terrible,” said Sam, observing her completely disheveled hair. “I think you’d better get up—we’ve let you sleep long enough.”

“Is it late?” Del mumbled.

“Uh… yeah. You’ve been asleep for hours.”

“Why didn’t you wake me up?”

“Crimson said to let you sleep.”

“That was dumb. Give me a sec.”

Del closed the door, put on her sweater, flattened her hair a bit with her hands, and emerged into the main hallway of the ship.

“Okay, I’m ready.”

“What’s that?” Sam asked.

Del was holding the fuzzy creature in her hand. It was purple, but at Sam’s voice, it began turning red.

“This was in my room last night,” Del said. “Look, it changes color. I can make it change to purple by being nice to it. Cool, huh?”

“I guess so,” said Sam. He wasn’t much for pets.

Together, Sam and Del headed up to the main deck of the boat. The sun shone brightly overhead, and it took Del a few seconds to adjust to the light. Crimson, Phil, and Guy were sitting together, talking and laughing away. Hollow was up at the ship’s wheel with a short telescope in his hand. Del’s eyes followed the outstretched sail from bottom to top to see Egreck perched atop of the mast in the crow’s nest with a much larger telescope. She looked around and realized that there was no land in sight.

“Where are we?” Del asked.

“While you four were sleeping, we sailed along the river, leaving the forest behind,” Crimson explained.

“We were just moving from the river to this lake when I got up,” said Sam. “That was about two hours ago I would guess.”

“Hey, what’s that thing?” Phil said, seeing the fuzzy creature.

“I wondered where you’d gotten to,” said Crimson, talking to the creature in Del’s arms. “She seems to have taken a liking to you, Del, judging by her color.”

“It’s a she?” Del asked.

“Yes,” Crimson replied. “Her name is Tabby. She’s a winx.”

“She changes color,” Del said.

“Her color will start by matching how you feel toward her and then will display how she feels. Purple is when she really likes something. She really likes you. She usually starts by mimicking sounds. Not in words, but in her own way. Then she’ll start responding to you.”

“Yeah—that happened last night,” Del said. “It was like we could talk to each other. Can she understand what I’m saying?”

“Not exactly, but she can quickly understand your mood and your feelings,” said Crimson. “All winxes can.”

“She’s pretty awesome,” said Del. “Is she yours?”

“Winxes don’t belong to anyone,” Crimson said. “They aren’t pets, but lumens help take care of them. We wouldn’t usually have one on a boat, but Tabby was particularly attached to Verdi, so we made an exception. Seems like she’s made a new friend, though. Don’t worry, Del. Verdi won’t mind.”

“Verdi, really?” said Guy. “Doesn’t seem like the type to like something so… fuzzy.
