Chapter 33

Spy and Second Classes

Max woke from his “sleep” with a yawn and hiccup. It was still plenty dark outside, but they had a schedule to keep. Emi unfurled herself in his arms, their beach training resulting in bruising down both of their sides—water wars, as they called it, was brutal. With a quick heal, they were ready to go.

They left their room and found some of the others in the common lobby. Vel and Reep sat alone at a long table eating a hearty breakfast. Before they could even sit, the innkeeper had appeared, asking for his order.

“Whatever they are having is fine,” he answered, his eyes moving to an empty table in the corner. “And some raw fish if you got it.”

The innkeeper darted into the back and returned a few minutes later with two plates. “If you still want those lessons about memory globes, I can teach you. I didn’t know you held such a high regard with Lord Honeygreen.”

Max gave her a sincere smile. “I would like that, thank you. I don’t think I’ll be able to today, however.”

The three of them made a bit of small talk while waiting for the others. Clammy was the first to arrive, her normally straight blonde hair disheveled and curly. The former princess rarely had bed-head and rarely arrived like she’d slept in the pigpens. She sat down and yanked food from Max’s plate.

“Good morning,” he said, an eyebrow raised.

Clammy responded with a growl.

“Or not…”

“What's the matter, girl?” Vel asked, already irritated. “We’ve got a long quest ahead of us, can’t have you acting like a brat.”

“Bad dream,” was all Clammy said.

Bishop arrived a few minutes later, entering from the front door. He sat down and ordered coffee, grinning like a madman.

“Visit the brothels, eh?” Vel asked with a mischievous voice.

“No!” the drake roared. The table went back to eating, but Bishop caught Max’s eye and winked.

What the hell…? Max honestly didn’t know what to think. “Any idea what to expect today?”

“Either dead bodies or blood-soaked lands.” Vel paused, then shrugged “Or both.”

“Any idea when the guide will be here?” Reep asked the table.

“He’s already here,” Max said, causing everyone, except Vel, to look around the otherwise empty common room. He pointed at the corner table—a thump echoed from a vacant table before an elf appeared, removing his invisibility ability.

The elf was an obvious [Rogue] of some sort—the class specialized in invisibility and subtly. He had on dark leather armors and carried twin daggers on his hip.

“H-how!?” the aghast elf asked

“What if he was an enemy assassin, Max? Why wouldn't you tell us?” Clammy demanded.

Suddenly, a cage of water sprouted from the floorboards and wrapped around the elf with a flex of Max’s magic. “I didn’t want to let him know I knew about him. I had also been slowly moving water over to him. Vel, you noticed, right?”

“I noticed you pooling water around that table, not the why, however,” Vel answered.

Max dropped the cage, letting the man out and slowly walk to the front of the group.
