CHAPTER 21
“L et me see that thing again.” Lonnie grabbed my hand and pretended he was putting on something special to give my ring a closer look.
“Oh, yes. He definitely gets an A-plus on this. This is platinum and at least one carat.”
“Boy, how can you tell that by looking at it?”
“Ms. Cara, I have been trying to school you since day one. You have to know things that are important. Like the grade of the diamond is more important than the size. When you study certain things, you learn to recognize them by sight alone.”
“Thank you for the life lesson.” Cara turned back to me.
We’d been discussing the entire run-in with Fallon from the other day.
“You need to sit him down and tell him everything. I know you’ve got your secret weapon over there working on something, but you really need to beat them to the punch. If they get their punch off first, that’s going to be a hard blow.”
“Aren’t we all philosophical?”
“Lonnie, don’t start with your kiss but don’t tell theory.”
“Sometimes we shouldn’t tell everything.”
Cara looked up at the ceiling and then back over to me.
“Cara, I’ve decided to tell him everything. About my business. About meeting Octavia. Everything. I plan to spend the rest of my life with this man. I love him and his love means more to me than all the money I’ll ever make. Besides, I wouldn’t give that bitch and her henpecked man the satisfaction of having something over me.”
Lonnie slapped my hand.
“You go, gurl!” He snapped his fingers.
“Good. This way, you’ll have a good start.”
Ebonee breezed into the office.
“Hello, ladies.” She paused and looked at Lonnie.
“Hello to you, too, beautiful.” He walked over to her and they air-kissed each other on both cheeks.
“See, I didn’t know what mood you were in today. Some days you’re in sistah-girl mode, and then others you’re being a lil’ butch.”
“You have never seen me act butch. Stop that lying.”
We all laughed. There was nothing butch about Lonnie.
“Where’s Lisa?” I looked behind Ebonee.
“She told me she was going to meet me here.”
“Now see, she’s the first one to have an attitude if things are chosen and she doesn’t have any input.”
Lonnie picked up his schedule book. “Why do you need her input? It’s your wedding.”
“Because Deeva has always been one to try and please everyone. Now see me, on the other hand, I could not care less about pleasing people.”
Lonnie winked at Ebonee. “I knew there was a reason I liked you.”
“Since I’m the biggest of them all, I should have the last say on what dress is chosen for us.”
Lisa walked into the room and everyone stopped talking.
“I guess I was the subject, since you all got quiet.” She dropped her purse on the table along with her jacket.
“Umm, Ms. Thang, don’t you know the bottom of your purse is one of the dirtiest things? I bet you just picked it up from the floor of your car.”
“And?”
“And you come in here and throw it
