Chap ter 6
Sitting and staring
I f we ever get into contact with extra-terrestrial life AKA aliens, will we be able to communicate to them? Well, not in our human language. We need a special language that means the same everywhere in this universe. Probably, you already know it well.
Yes, I’m talking about the beautiful language of mathematics. Aliens’ symbol for number ‘42’ will be different and they will have a different name for it but ‘42’ as a quantity in their minds will be the same as ours. 42 apples will mean 42 apples everywhere in the universe. Itself on the Earth, the symbols for numbers are different in different scripts and we call them by different names but the idea remains the same everywhere. Universality and consistency is the real power of mathematics. People say that mathematics is not something that we invented but discovered. God, if exists, must be a very fluent speaker of it. So, scientists use mathematics to figure out what this universe is and predict its functioning. It is their best and the only tool to describe it accurately. It enables us to talk to everything in this universe. An inch long equation can tell us more than any book written without mathematics.
I want to convey that pure sciences such as mathematics depend on concrete logic & make accurate predictions. It’s not a philosophy which changes its definition of reality now and then. A theory, which has a good mathematical support & describes the world, is true everywhere else in the universe. Here on Earth, gravity works on the same laws as it nears Pluto or near the stars of the Andromeda galaxy. A theory that holds good for the experiments conducted can be applied anywhere to make predictions.
Many of the theories in physics give odd and absurd explanations about this universe but are backed up by strong mathematics. Einstein’s Theory of Relativity was once what I call on-the-paper theory with a bunch of equations, seemed to describe weird laws of this universe. We tested its predictions, and they came out to be as desired, so we gave it the title of one of the most fundamental theories of our universe. When Newton gave his theory of gravitation, we thought it was the ultimate theory of gravity, making good predictions and was in agreement with the experiments. But as the instruments used for measurement became more and more precise and we took more and more data of the orbits of planets, we started to see anomaly which Newton’s version of gravity could not explain. Einstein’s version could describe the origin of gravity and the equations he produced gave accurate results and explained the anomalies and ultimately became the theory of gravitation.
Then, why do we still teach Newton’s version although it’s not valid anymore & we have something ‘better’?
The answer is because it is simpler to understand and gives out similar results as Einstein’s theory, which is way more complicated.
