Chapter Sixteen

“Where are we going?” Deborah asked as Lapi led her by the hand toward the stables. Everyone in their family had eaten and drunk their fill at the wedding supper, and the elders had headed back to the village.

Now, night had long since fallen, and the summer moon and stars were the only light by which to navigate. Riding on Lapi’s horse over the rocky terrain wasn’t the best choice. What if the horse twisted a leg?

Lapi’s hand was strong and warm in hers and, oh, so persuasive. Besides, he was her husband now, and Deborah’s heart was already beating fast as her thoughts raced forward to sharing all things with him now that they were married.

“It’s a secret.” Lapi kept his voice just above a whisper. “Here, climb up.”

He set his hands on her waist and helped her onto the horse. Then he swung up behind her. Despite not knowing where they were going, a thrill ran through her as Lapi’s arms encircled hers. His breath tickled her cheek, and his sage scent enveloped her.

She let herself relax in his hold; after all, she trusted him completely. And he seemed to have a plan in mind. But her curiosity grew as he guided the horse south, away from the homestead and past Barak’s place. She remained silent when the horse had to navigate rocky areas in the moonlight.

“Here we are,” Lapi said, and Deborah looked around.

The ridge was now behind them, and to the left was a sloping hill. Otherwise, she could see only acacia trees and a small meadow beyond. Then she saw that a tent had been set up in the meadow.

Lapi helped her down from the horse, and his hands lingered on her waist, making her feel suddenly nervous. She’d be spending the night alone with her new husband for the very first time.

“Is this our new home?” she teased, hoping to tamp down some of her nervousness.

“For a short time.” Lapi stepped away from her and tied the horse to a nearby acacia trunk. Then he returned to her side and linked their fingers together. “Come and see.”

Deborah walked with him toward the small tent. She didn’t know if she, let alone Lapi, could even stand up straight in it.

“Just a moment,” Lapi said when they reached the entrance. He released her hand and lifted the tent flap, then he disappeared inside.

Seconds later, a dim glow came from inside, and Lapi peeked out. “It’s ready.” He held out his hand, and she grasped it.

Lapi guided her inside, and she stepped into the small tent chamber set up with cushions, a mat, several rugs, and a low table with two burning oil lamps. In the center of the table was a platter of dates, olives, melon, and cheese. A jug of wine, or water, sat upon the table next to two cups.

It was like an oasis.

“I love it,” Deborah said, her voice sounding more breathless than she had intended.

“Good.” Lapi steered her to one of the cushions, and she settled into the softness.
