The scene inside the anteroom of the Golden Slumber Chamber would’ve been a perfect display in the wax museum of Madame Tussauds. Two women—Helen and Isabella—were completely frozen as both held the other in their clutches, while the two men standing behind them—James and Lieutenant Tracy—were also transfixed in their places. The others were standing completely breathless around these four. The eyes of all present were fixed on the dead man standing right behind Isabella. Paralyzed, she looked over her shoulder, right into the eyes of the corpse, but then took a deep breath and finally uttered one sentence.

“Is that you… John?”

Seemingly startled by the question, the dead man turned his body around, which made the handle of the knife sticking out of his back visible to the others. All in the anteroom gasped in unison. Tracy felt that it was his duty as a representative of the authorities to say something.

“Wha—what are you?”

It was a rather silly question to ask someone, but nobody in the room thought so at the time.

Save for one dead man. And he replied to the question.

“What do you mean, what am I? Who are you supposed to be?”

This was the third time that night someone had asked Tracy who he was. And this time, he was going to introduce himself to a dead person. A nasty feeling started to rise up from his stomach.

“I’m Lieutenant Tracy from the Marbletown Police Station. Aren’t you supposed to be dead?”

It was only after uttering these words that Tracy realized how strange his query was. Aghh, what the hell am I saying?

Tracy’s question appeared to have taken the deceased by equal surprise, and flustered, John tried to look over his shoulder at his own back. Even in that pose, the unique handle of the knife plunged into his back was visible to him. After checking what happened to his back, the dead man shrugged.

“I guess so. It looks like this knife’s rather deep inside my back, but I don’t feel any pain.”

The things he should ask, the things he should say: a myriad of thoughts disappeared as quickly as they appeared inside Tracy’s confused mind. They never taught him how to question a corpse at the police academy. While the lieutenant was still flustered, Helen suddenly cried out: “John! You’ve been murdered! You’ve been killed by Isabella! You remember, right?”

Helen had been in an aggravated state even before the dead John had gotten up, but this took the cake. She broke out in short fits of high-pitched laughter as she daringly flung her accusations at Isabella. The dead man was taken aback by Helen’s rant, and he simply stared at his sister-in-law as he blinked from behind his glasses. Tracy remembered he was supposed to be the one in charge of this situation and took a step towards the dead man.
