Princess
The whole Benson incident took the wind out of everyoneâs sails. In silence, Maud, Annette, and Krysteen walked back to Maudâs house. By the time they returned, the remaining Murder Club women were already leaving. Each had some lame excuse about needing to do something or be somewhere. Estelle had to clean the cat box. And by the way, Maud realized either she or Annette needed to do the same for Princess. Evening was approaching, and all three women were dragging.
Annette opened the door and held it for her mother and Krysteen as they entered. Maud walked in and dropped her keys into the antique bowl on the antique table by the front door. âMake yourself at home, Krysteen,â she said. She couldnât believe she was saying that, either. Maybe this whole murder thing was making her see Krysteen in a better light. The woman wasnât all bad, was she? And sheâd made some good points along the way to help the murder investigation.
Annette came in and shut the door behind her. âWhereâs Princess?â Annette asked.
âYeah, where is she? She rubs against my ankles every time I walk in, but I havenât seen her the past few days.â Krysteen said.
âThat cat!â Maud said as she made her way into the kitchen. âAnnette, we have some leftovers, right?â
Annette walked over to the fridge and opened it. âWeâve got enough food to feed an army!â
âKrysteen, you want to stay for supper?â Maud called the last meal of the day supper, as did all Southerners of her generation. She was always slightly perplexed as to why Annette often called it dinner. Oh well, things change.
âIâd love to. Iâm assuming we have wine?â
Annette busted out laughing.
âAnnette, why are you laughing like that?â Maud asked although she knew the reason.
âBecause thatâs such a silly question, Mom. You not having wine?â Annette laughed more, apparently enjoying the fact that she might be slightly annoying her mother.
Maud looked in the wine cabinet in the kitchen. âEmpty in here!â
âIâll look in the back bedroom closet,â Annette said. That was where Maud stored boxes and boxes of her favorite vintages.
âAnything I can do?â Krysteen offered.
âYou can help Annette bring a few bottles into the kitchen,â Maud told Krysteen. Then Maud turned her attention to the refrigerator. Letâs see, she said to herself. The rest of the lasagna, some meatballs in grape leaves, and garlic bread from the other night should do it. She pulled each plate out of the fridge and placed it on the kitchen countertop opposite.
âMaud!â That was Krysteen.
âMust I do everything?â Maud said sotto voce as she wiped her hands on a dish towel and flung it onto the kitchen counter. She joined Annette and Krysteen in the back bedroom, where they were staring into the depths of the closet. âWhatâs so difficult about getting a few bottles of wine?â she asked grumpily.
Annette was squatting down and giggling.
Krysteen backed up a step. âMaud, you might want to see this!â
Of course, perfect timing, Maud thought. What needed fixing now? Last month it was the ice maker line to the fridge.
