How did we ever find out about people before the internet, thought Fran. Good old-fashioned legwork or countless telephone calls, she imagined. And, after only ten minutes of searching, Fran had discovered more about Mimi Chapman than she ever wanted to know. Because when you looked like Mimi, you were always good for a story and people were fascinated by her. Or rather what she wore and what she looked like. Nothing Fran uncovered told her what Mimi was like as a person. Did anyone even know? Maybe not even Mimi herself.
Fran had found countless articles, all detailing events that Mimi had attended. For the most part these were charity fundraisers or other society parties where the great and the good congregated. But once youâd read one, you hardly needed to read the others, they all said much the same thing. The only details which varied were the colour of the dress Mimi wore, or the name of the organisation sheâd been supporting. It was trivia and Fran needed to go much deeper than that.
Thinking for a moment, she tried another tack. What she wanted to know was the kind of background Mimi came from. She had obviously adopted her husbandâs name on their marriage, but what was her maiden name? And who were her family? And there was one place Fran could get all that information and more: Facebook.
Love it, or loathe it, it was a treasure trove of information and who hadnât looked up someoneâs details just because they were being nosey? If their privacy settings were lax, you could find out all manner of things and Mimi, it would appear, was an open book. Within moments of logging on, Fran uncovered her profile, and as everything about Mimi was for show, everything about her was on show.
In a flurry of activity, probably when the account was a new plaything, Mimi had carefully filled in details of what TV shows she loved, what restaurants she favoured, and a whole host of other trivia. By looking at her liked pages, Fran could also see which hairdressers she rated, nail bars, masseurs, gyms, anything and everything to keep Mimi looking at her best. What was also very obvious, however, was that Mimi didnât want to admit she existed beyond a certain age. There were no schools listed, no universities or colleges attended, no family members given, and no home town either. She could, of course, be being protective, but Fran was more of the opinion that life for Mimi started when she became Mrs Chapman. But there was more than one way of finding out about her past.
Clicking on Mimiâs photos first of all, Fran checked whether she had created any albums beyond the ones which Facebook automatically allocated. And there were loads. Parties mostly. Fundraising events. But not the kind of album Fran was looking for at all, nothing personal. She could look through them all and see if anyone had been tagged, but, instead, she started to look at Mimiâs list of friends.
