After the press conference, Stella buttonholed Danny before he drove back to Stockholm.

‘Well, that was fun,’ she said, hoping irony worked the same way in Sweden that it did in the UK.

‘You mean Solveig?’

‘She made me out to be a cross between,’ she tugged on her ponytail, ‘I don’t know—’

‘Eva Braun and Marine Le Pen?’

Stella laughed sharply. ‘I was going to say Jenny’s press officer and her inside woman on the SPA.’

‘Does that mean you’re not going to blame me for inviting her?’ he asked with a small smile.

Suddenly feeling guilty, she picked a non-existent speck of fluff off his left shoulder then smoothed down the lapels of his English-cut tweed jacket.

‘I’m sorry, Danny. She rattled me, that’s all’ she said.

‘No problem. But if I can offer you some advice?’

‘Of course.’

‘You should probably keep your distance from Jenny Frievalds from now on,’ he said. ‘She has her supporters, but the mainstream Swedish media are solidly against her.’

‘Believe me, I’m trying.’

Letting him go, Stella looked round the room and signalled to Jonna. They headed to a private office.

‘We really need to identify a suspect. I felt like a pig at a hog roast out there,’ Stella said. ‘Have you tracked Lilianne down yet?’

Jonna shook her head. ‘I’ve been calling care homes in Uppsala but so far no joy.’

‘Keep trying. I want to know why he switched from Saint Matteus to All Saints.’

‘Maybe that’s where Pernilla got married.’

‘And how would he know that? Was he a guest?’

‘I guess he could have been. Maybe he was a guest at all three weddings. It’s a small town.’

‘Let’s get guest lists for all three weddings and start cross-matching them,’ Stella said. ‘Maybe he had a grudge against the three women he killed. Did they go out for a while then dump him? Were they part of a group that humiliated him somehow?’

Jonna nodded. ‘Let’s say he did date each of them. They end it and he can’t bear the rejection. He obsesses over them,’ she said. ‘He can’t move past it. He can just about contain it while they’re single, but when they marry, it’s too much and his jealousy turns to hate. It’s a motive.’

‘It is, and until we get some decent forensics, it might be our best way of finding him.’
