Dear Bullied,

No one likes or deserves to be mistreated. To be able to say something to someone, we need to check in with ourselves and listen to what our feelings are telling us. The more specific you can be about what your friends are doing, the more you’ll be able to speak up about what’s bothering you. Do they hit you? Do they bump into you? Do they say unkind words to you? Get down to the details. Sometimes we’re shy because we’re not sure what to say.

See if you think about it in terms of movements. That will give you more clarity, and then you’ll know what to say. Raising a hand is a movement, making a face that expresses dislike or disrespect is a movement. Once you identify what the movement is, you can express what’s happening, share how you feel about it and make a request for change. For example, “When you . . . (fill in the movement: make a face, speak angrily, or grab something from me), I feel . . . (fill in how the movement makes you feel: sad, hurt, uncomfortable, or angry?) Please stop.”

Sincerely,

Libby
