It was dark by the time Phillips arrived home. As she stepped out of the Mini, she suddenly remembered her promise to call Adam and let him know her plans for the rest of the evening. In all honesty, she was exhausted, so hoped he wouldn’t mind if they didn’t see each other tonight. All she wanted to do was soak in a hot bath, then go to bed. Fishing her phone from her pocket, she pulled up the favourites and hit Adam’s number as she walked along the street towards her house. It took a moment to connect but eventually began to ring as she pushed open the front gate. The sound of ‘Are You Lonesome Tonight?’ by Elvis Presley stopped her in her tracks. Adam’s ringtone. Pulling the phone away from her ear, she focused all her senses on locating the source of the music.

What she saw next made her blood run cold. Adam, lying prostrate amongst the shrubs and flowers.

‘Adam!’ she shouted as she rushed over and dropped to her knees. ‘Adam!’

He didn’t move.

She placed her fingers to his neck in search of a pulse. It was there, but only just. ‘I’m gonna get help, Adam. Stay with me, babe.’ She rolled him into the recovery position. Only then did she notice his blood-saturated T-shirt. ‘Oh, Jesus. Please stay with me!’

Even in the darkness, Adam’s skin appeared ashen. He had lost a lot of blood. As she dialled 999, Phillips pulled up his bloody T-shirt in search of the source and spotted three large knife wounds on his torso. The call connected.

‘This is Detective Chief Inspector Phillips from the Major Crimes Unit. I need an ambulance urgently. My boyfriend has been stabbed at least three times in the abdomen, maybe more. He has a pulse, but he’s lost a lot of blood and he’s in a very bad way.’

‘What’s your location?’ asked the operator, her voice calm and clear.

‘Number 11 Beaumont Avenue, Chorlton. Please hurry.’

Phillips could hear the operator typing on the other end of the line.

‘They’re on their way, ma’am. ETA five minutes.’

Phillips ended the call, then dialled Jones.

‘Missing me already, Guv?’ he joked as he answered.

‘Adam’s been stabbed.’

‘What?’ His tone was incredulous. ‘Is he badly hurt?’

‘Yes.’ Phillips had to fight away the tears. ‘I think he could die.’

‘Oh God, Guv. Where did it happen?’

‘Outside my house. I found him lying in the garden when I got home. He wasn’t even supposed to be here tonight.’

‘I’ll come straight over.’

‘There’s no point. The paramedics are only a few minutes out. We’ll be gone by the time you get here.’

‘In that case, I’ll meet you at A&E.’

Phillips nodded, but no words would come out.

‘And I’ll call Bov and Entwistle. We’re going to need to secure the scene at your place to preserve the evidence.’

Up until then, Phillips had been oblivious to the fact she was kneeling in the middle of a crime scene. After almost twenty years of forensically poring over bloodied bodies and murder locations, she’d never imagined that CSIs would one day set up their tents in her own front garden.
