The Monster

As he pushed the Chevy ever faster down State 162 toward Shiprock, Harley Ponyboy approached the situation from every angle. He had cooled off a good bit since leaving the trailhead and, given what little he knew, could not decide how best to handle the situation. Other than physically assaulting the man, again. There was no doubt in his mind that, if he didn’t check in with Billy, the man would come for him, and it might get ugly. He did have a pretty good idea where he could find Albert Nez. Celia had told him that when she and Albert were first married, her father had said he would leave him a piece of his property up on the Tsé Bii Ndzisgii.

Celia mentioned Albert had it in his mind, that he would get that part that had the spring on it. Without that, the rest of the place would be near worthless and could be bought for very little. It was soon after this, the two had split up and Celia moved away. Eldon Bitsui later told his daughter he no longer wanted anything to do with Albert. He had suspected Albert had been mistreating her despite her not saying anything about it. Celia only hung her head at this and didn’t deny her father’s suspicions.

That was when Eldon gave her money to move to the far side the reservation and well out of Albert’s reach. Her aunt lived there, he told her, and would take her in until she got on her feet. The woman was his sister and lived alone, he assured her. Albert Nez wouldn’t have any idea where to look, he assured her.

All of this had been years ago, and she’d nearly blocked her mind from thinking about it. Until Albert showed up after learning of her father’s death, demanding what he said Eldon had promised him.

Now, here it was years later, and the man still was causing all this turmoil for Celia. Harley was determined to end it, once and for all. He couldn’t bear to leave this hanging over them any longer.

When he pulled into the lane he slowly drove past his own darkened house and directly up to Charlie’s place, where he expected to find Celia and his son. Passing the horse barn, he immediately noticed the Tribal unit parked in the shadows. It was too late to back up. Billy, who had been sitting on the fender, jumped down and quickly moved out into the road behind him. Harley’s first thought was to put the truck in reverse and… But Billy Red Clay was not a man to back down. The last thing Harley had in mind was causing him any harm. He shut down the engine and opening the door, got out and started back toward the policeman, as though he hadn’t any idea what was going on.

Billy came toward him with one hand on his service revolver and the other holding a flashlight beamed directly in his eyes. “Let me see your hands Harley,” he called out.
