THEY REGROUPED in Josieâs office about half an hour after the limo returned. The station was nearly deserted. The morning watch commander waved at Josie as she unlocked her office door. She asked if everything was okay and the young lieutenant gave her an immediate thumbs-up sign.
Everyone agreed the most interesting thing that happened all night was the appearance of Captain Berry. Margeâs encounter with the men in the closed room was interesting, but she had no idea what the meeting was about or if it held any significance for their investigation. Berry had come alone and hadnât stayed long, but he spent most of his time huddled with McClain.
âAt the end there, who did you think you saw, Donnie?â Josie asked Fricke whoâd been unusually quiet during the discussion. âBy the way, you did a good job. I think Redâs got almost everybodyâs name who was there, thanks to you.â
Fricke shifted his weight and tried to look unconcerned. âI dunno, Maâam. I got a little punchy or something. Forget I mentioned it.â
âWho did you see?â Josie asked again. She trusted Fricke even when he doubted himself.
Staring at the floor, Fricke took a long breath and blew it out in frustration. He didnât want to speak but was struggling to obey her and force the words out.
âLook, it might not mean anything, but I want to know who you thought you saw.â This time Josie said it in a way that didnât leave any option for the young man to remain silent.
âIf it werenât you, Iâd never say nothing to nobody.â He sighed and continued quickly, âI got a look out the kitchen door at a couple a guys that I thought for a second were John and Robin. When I got out there they were gone. Thatâs when I told you, but now I ainât so sure it was them.â
âJohn and Robin?â Josie asked, looking at Behan and Marge. They both shrugged.
Josie turned to Fricke again and he said, âSergeant Richardsâ guys, John Marko and Robin Leeds.â
