CHAPTER 26

I sat in Baxter’s SUV, mentally preparing myself to do this job while he readied our communication equipment. I’d interviewed people before, and I’d even pretended to be less official than I was while doing it. This was different, though. I had to essentially pick this guy up, or close to it. While getting a date never proved to be too much of a problem for me, I didn’t always land every guy I set my sights on. And having to do it in front of Baxter was going to make it all the more difficult.

“Earpiece,” he said, holding a tiny flesh-colored nub in his open palm, which I took from him and placed in my ear. He studied me for a moment and then handed over a small clip-on mic and receiver pack. “I don’t know where in the world you’re going to hide this. Good luck.”

While he turned his head the other direction, I reached up my shirt and clipped the mic inside the front of my bra, then snaked the cord though the cup and down my side. I plugged the cord into the receiver, which I stuck in my front jeans pocket. It could pass well enough for a phone with a bulky case.

“Done.” I held out my arms.

He gave me a quick glance. “Can’t see it.”

“As long as no one gets handsy with me, I should be fine.”

Baxter’s face twisted into a scowl. “Anyone lays a finger on you, and I’m pulling the plug.”

“Calm down, Dad. I got this. Dealing with terrible men is a specialty of mine.”

“And keeping people safe is a specialty of mine. Don’t test me.”

I eyed him. “You’re having second thoughts.”

He hung his head. “This seemed like a good idea at first, but now…”

I didn’t give him the chance to back out. Wrenching open the passenger door, I hopped out and ran for the entrance to the bar.

His voice filled my ear. “Ellie…”

“Game face, Detective. This is happening.”

The word “dive” didn’t begin to cover how gross this place was. The soles of my boots stuck to the floor as I snaked my way through the too-close tables to find an empty stool at the bar. I had to hand it to Skyler’s band, Table 13. Dumb name, but they had a decent sound and had managed to pack the place. Or maybe the crowd was here for two-dollar shot night.

I ordered a can of Red Bull so the bartender wouldn’t bug me, and so I didn’t have to drink out of any of the glasses I assumed he hadn’t bothered to wash properly. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Baxter walk through the door. He didn’t hide the disdain on his face as he swept the room and headed for an empty table near the back.

“This place is a shit hole,” he said.

I covered my mouth with my hand as discreetly as I could. “No kidding. At least the band is good.”

“Good is a stretch. They’re okay.”

He was being contrary.
