As soon as Davenport got the hint and left, I immediately turned the Jeep off and got back out, heading straight for a small huddle of men. J, Jimmy, and Dave stood off to the side of my house, having a quiet conversation with my other neighbor, Mr. Thurgood.
Oliver Thurgood lived on the other side of me, closer to the park, and I had to wonder if his house had taken damage as well. He was a small older man who likely bought in the neighborhood because he thought it was going to be quiet.
Oops.
âI saw those girls sneaking around the property and called the police. I know you two are the police, too, but I didnât know if yaâll needed backup or not. Plus, Ms. Adler has been through enough with her father dying and all.â
Placing a gentle hand on Mr. Thurgoodâs shoulder, I shot him a grateful smile. âI really appreciate that. Thank you. Iâm so sorry for the trouble. Was your house damaged at all?â
Mr. Thurgood covered my hand with his weathered one, a sense of peace hitting me at his papery touch. âOh, no. My house is fine. Just a little singed grass, but thatâll come back. I think most of the damage was farther south, closer to Cooperâs property.â
Mr. Thurgood was one of the few people on the street that didnât look at me like I was a circus performer. A small crowd still gathered on the park side of the street on the sidewalk, hissing like snakes as they gave me, my house, and the whole tableau disapproving looks.
Well, excuse me. It isnât like I blew my house up all by myself.
âIâll supervise these young men boarding up your window, too. That way you can go get some rest. What, with the funeral and the earthquake and now this, you must be exhausted. Shoot, Iâve lived in Tennessee my whole life and never felt an earthquake like that.â
Earthquakes werenât unheard of in this part of Tennessee. This close to a fault line, we got tremors every once in a while. But whatever Iâd done had apparently shaken the whole damn neighborhood.
âThat is so kind of you to say, Mr. Thurgood.â
âI have told you for three years straight to call me Oliver.â
There was no way on this green earth that I would ever in a million years call Mr. Thurgood Oliver. I smiled at him. âOf course.â
Bishopâs approach rattled through my senses, and I looked up just in time to see the gold flash in his irises. âTake your hand off of her. Now.â
Mr. Thurgoodâs hand flew off of mine, and I drew my fingers away from his shoulder. âI didnât mean anything by it. She was just soââ
âI donât care. Donât touch her again,â Bishop growled, wrapping an arm around my middle and attempting to draw me away.
I elbowed him in the stomach and turned on him, getting in between him and my neighbor. âWhat the hell is your problem? Mr. Thurgood has been nothing but sweet to me the entire time Iâve lived here.
