Chapter Twelve

The truly crappy thing about Darby’s open admission about Kole? The fact was it could have been a trigger that led Violet to possible suicide. As things stood it was looking more and more like the woman I tried to help actually had taken her own life despite what she told me. I’d been fortunate up until now. I’d never lost a client before, nor a patient when I’d called them that. And while it was a selfish thing to think, it was also heartbreaking.

More guilt. Yay.

It hadn’t been an hour, but I was in no mood to linger. If Kole wanted to talk to me about Violet, he’d better be prepared to do so now. Then again, maybe I should have given myself time to cool off since my head was now wrapping around the serious contemplation of his turn of attention from the former star of this particular movie and her replacement. Again, not that I blamed the young man or Darby for Violet’s death. Unless one or the both of them had a hand in it, literally rather than emotionally. But I had a feeling neither was in any state of dress nor focus to have made the deceased star a priority last night.

I paused by the corner of the workout mat, Kole’s carefully choreographed fight sequence (why they needed a fight sequence in a romcom I had no idea, but I wasn’t a screenwriter, so what did I know?) unfolding in front of me while all I could think about was Violet’s call for help. When he looked up and noticed me, he immediately waved off his sparring partner and jogged toward me, a towel tossed in his direction caught with a deft hand, the white terrycloth turning faintly beige as the dust from the set and the remains of his foundation wiped clean. A fresh water bottle in hand, he stepped out to join me, expression grim and sad.

“Thank you for doing this, Dr. Pringle,” he said. “I know Violet was a handful, and she didn’t come across like it, but there was a time when she was amazing and in awe of this job. She always said she didn’t work, she played for a living.” He shrugged his broad shoulders, catching his breath as he gestured toward a pair of folding chairs near the workout space. I took a seat, waiting for him to go on, which he did, another vigorous wipe with the towel clearing the sweat from his face and neck. “The work gets to you after a while, though, you know?” He kept his voice low, but it didn’t sound like he was trying to hide anything, just wanted a bit of privacy between us. “It’s harder for women than men, too. Our shelf life is longer. She was barely thirty and starting to get Mommy role offers.” He snorted at that. “As if anyone would think Violet would make a good mother.” He flinched when he realized what he’d said.
