Even though Pete Gilley’s escape attempt had failed, it didn’t mean that Father Ed wasn’t going to try to come up with a plan for him and the others if worse came to worst and they were forced to make a move instead of standing by and waiting to be rescued. He thought about what resources they had at their disposal and tried to make the pieces fit.

They only had two possible vehicles they might use, the mini-bus that made its rounds through the surrounding communities and picked the kids up for school in the morning and dropped them off afterwards, and Father Ed’s own vehicle, a ten-year-old but still serviceable silver Plymouth four-door sedan. There were twenty-nine kids who would have to be gotten out, plus Sister Hillary, Janice and Annie Kimball, and Betty Ward—and he didn’t expect Betty to be much help. Plus little Bertie would probably be wailing the whole time.

With all of his thoughts not adding up to much, and in fact still seeming futile, Father Ed went into the chapel where Sister Hillary had assembled the small flock and was leading them in prayer. He took a seat in one of the back pews and let her carry on. Janice Kimball was trying to comfort and console Bertie Samuels, who was in that same pew, but about five feet away, crying and moaning, while the rest of the folks were saying the Lord’s Prayer.

“Or Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Amen.”

Suddenly there was a loud pounding from somewhere—and Father Ed it was from the back door from which Pete had made his failed escape attempt. The folks who had been praying stopped and went into panic mode, some of them frozen and some about to start running in circles.

There was more loud knocking and a gruff, frantic voice. “Let me in! Those things are gonna get me, goddamn it!”

Realizing it was likely an unbitten human in danger, Father Ed ran to the door and unbolted it. It was Andy Brown who had pounded on the door—with the Dowman zombie and two others almost upon him.

As the door swung open, Andy’s eyes met Father Ed’s for a moment, then Andy quickly turned and kicked the Dowman zombie as hard as he could in its chest, knocking it back. Then he rushed into the building and Father Ed slammed the door and bolted it.

“Thanks, Father,” Andy said. “Sorry for my foul language.”

The priest just stared, nonplussed.

Andy said, “Don’t be scared of me, I’m a cop but two hunters tied me up and took my gun and badge. They thought I purposely shot somebody, but I had to because she was already dead and about to come back. They didn’t know that and wouldn’t believe me.
