“DI West, are you sure you shouldn’t be in the hospital?”

As with everything, Superintendent Wade’s concern went both ways. On the one hand, she was concerned for her colleague and friend’s wellbeing. On the other hand, she was conscious about the inspector’s weakened state impacting her ability to do her job.

“Ma’am,” Leah began, stood opposite the gaffer, having gone home for a shower and a change of clothes. But because of the rush job, she couldn’t quite get rid of the scent of smoke that clung to her. “It’s going to take a lot more than a burning building to get the better of me. I am exactly where I need to be.”

Nora was reaching that point where it was pointless to argue with the detective and so focused on the matter at hand. “Forensics have said that the door to the studio was forced shut from the outside. You’re lucky to be alive.”

“And I think I have a good idea who is responsible,” Leah noted grimly, feeling geared up for a confrontation despite the size of her prospective opponent. “Francis Arden.”

“The bodyguard?” Nora asked, surprised, clearly not having placed him high on the list of suspects. “Why?”

“We’re still trying to work that one out,” she explained, feeling like she was coming up short. “As far as we can tell, though, the only person who could have known that we were going to that studio was Arden. In fact, he was the one who pointed us in that direction in the first place.” She wondered whether the whole thing was a trap to kill them all.

“But why would he lock you in the building?” Nora asked quizzingly, unable to imagine the scenario. “I’ve caught a glimpse of that man and the muscle he’s packing. I would have thought beating you to death was more his style. No offence.”

“He’s clearly a lot more perceptive than any of us gave him credit for,” the inspector explained, remembering how easily they’d been taken in by the sight of the bodyguard who was trying to do right by his charge even in death. He had us all fooled.

“But you’re still missing a motive,” Nora noted, always checking over every single angle. “Yes, you can certainly point the finger at him regarding what happened to you and DC Jones. But why would he kill Kaley? Especially in that grotesque manner?” The superintendent had since done some research on the effects of hydrogen peroxide, and was tormented by flashes of what the young woman must have gone through in her final moments.

“We’re still working on that,” she responded, trying to demonstrate that work was still being carried out despite the obstacles they were facing.

“He had you both dead to rights back at the studio,” the gaffer continued, launching into her hypothesis. “In my experience, if you want somebody dead, you don’t just walk away and hope everything will pan out. You make sure that they stay dead. By walking away, regardless of his intent, he gave you a way out and a means for you to save the lives of everyone trapped.
