Chapter forty-one

Wilcox wasn’t expecting any miracle breakthrough to result from a return trip to the Jobcentre, but, having agreed to go, he was giving it his best shot. The supervisor in the too-tight skirt was surprised to be getting another visit.

‘I just don’t think there’s any more we can tell you’ she said.

‘Sometimes’ said Wilcox, ‘people suddenly remember something ages after the event and these insights can be very helpful. So I’d just like to talk to everybody again.’

‘Stella’s not in today’ she said, ‘but you can talk to Romy and Jasmin, if that’s any good.’

‘That will be great, thank you’ said Wilcox. It wasn’t great of course, it was crap, because the only person who knew Amy well was apparently Stella. But he might as well see if he could get anything out of the other two, now he was here.

Romy shuffled in sideways and sat down carefully as if trying to minimise the amount of space she was taking up. Wilcox found this an interesting contrast to most of the aggressive and opinionated young women that he encountered on a daily basis.

‘There’s nothing to worry about’ he began. ‘I realise Stella is the person who knew Amy best, but she’s not here today so I’m hoping you can help.’

She smiled uncertainly. ‘I’ll do my best.’

‘Great’ said Wilcox in what he hoped was a bracing manner. ‘Now can you just tell me what Amy’s job entailed, to begin with.’

Romy seemed on safe ground here and gave him a detailed rundown of all the backroom and client-facing tasks which the four of them performed on a rotating basis.

‘So would you say Amy pulled her weight?’

She hesitated a moment and crossed her long, skinny legs. ‘Up to about two months ago, she definitely did, she was often the last to leave in the evening, but I would say that recently she was losing interest. She often complained that the work was boring. Well, it is, to be honest.’

‘Do you think she was looking for another job?’

‘Yes, I think so. I walked past her desk one day last week and saw a job application form up on her screen.’

‘Could you see the name of the company?’

‘No, that would have been further up the screen.’

‘Could you see what type of job it was?’

‘It was one of those fashion jobs. Brand awareness assistant, merchandising junior, something like that.’

‘So she wanted to work in fashion?’

‘Yes, she was interested in clothes, make-up, all that stuff.’ Romy said this as if clothes and make-up had no relevance to her own life.

‘Did she talk to you about it?’

‘Not much, to be honest. I guess she knew I wasn’t that interested.’

‘How about social media? Was she following people in fashion?’

‘I think that’s very likely. She spent a lot of time on her phone.’

‘Did she ever mention these influencers?’ He brough out his phone and showed her the Flo & Cal Instagram page.

She shook her head regretfully. ‘No, not to me.’

‘And can you remember anything about that last day you
