Chapter seventeen

I noticed an enemy ship sneaking up on Liz from behind. I swung my Viper around in a sharp curve to go to her help, but Alitaa, who was closer than me, wrenched her ship around steeply and took care of the Xenoakakie space fighter with a missile, turning the enemy ship into a rapidly expanding cloud of space dust.

I contacted her. “Thank you, Alitaa. I owe you one.”

“You owe me nothing,” she replied. “I am just doing my job.”

“That was nicely done,” Cordi told me. “But, in general, things are getting pretty desperate. We’re losing too many ships, too fast.”

I maneuvered to get on a Xenoakakie space fighter’s six. It went on a power dive, and I gave chase. I kept trying to get a lock on the enemy Viper, but the sneaky bastard refused to make it easy for me. “No matter. We’ll find a way to get out of this. We always do.”

I kept the enemy ship in my crosshairs and fired my cannons, scoring hit after hit, until the gomer I was chasing was blown to pieces, lighting the dark space with a bright, blinding flash.

In the blink of an eye, a fleet of rectangular space fighters appeared right above us.

In a way, this was a familiar scene, one that had haunted my dreams for months after the Xortaags invasion (which killed seven hundred million humans). I used to have nightmares about this exact situation every other night.

Deathbringers.

Twenty-two thousand of them. The Xortaag Foreign Legion fleet that had slaughtered the poor Talgoinians under Mushgaana’s command. The same Mushgaana whose doppelganger killed two million humans the last time I saw him.

The Deathbringers flew toward us.

“Were you saying something about finding a way out of this mess?” Cordi asked me as the distance between the Xortaag space fighters and my fleet shrank rapidly.

“Frak me,” I murmured.
