Chapter 22

When Evie and Tomi returned to the apartment, everyone was talking at once. Ana and Derek were arguing by the desk while Maggie was whistling loudly, trying to capture everyone’s attention. Chimes were going off periodically on their phones, sending icicles past Evie’s flesh, wedging their way deep within her bones, but the group chat remained quiet. Evie stared at her phone, almost willing the threat to try her again, as her eyes fixated on the screen.

“Are you guys OK?” Derek suddenly asked, the chatter finally quieting down to a soft buzz.

“What did that last text mean?” Ana asked with interest.

“Evie and I spotted a truck at Pearl Bay High. We tried to catch up to it, but we were detained by a rent-a-cop,” Tomi explained, sinking into the living room couch and stretching out her legs.

“Are you guys crazy?” Maggie shrieked. “You’re lucky to be alive.”

“We had to try,” Evie explained, still standing in the middle of the room. She was too anxious to sit down.

“There was a truck at Shane’s murder, so I guess we can assume it’s our guy,” Ana said softly.

“I don’t want to think of him as our guy,” Maggie complained, her face crinkling into a disapproving frown.

“You know what I mean,” Ana said.

“Yes, we can assume that the killer has a black pickup truck, but there are a lot of people in this town with one. That doesn’t really help us, but we’re trying to come up with a way to convince the security guard to release the photos to us. Does anyone have a connection to the police?” Evie asked, placing her hands on her hips.

“The killer wants us to stay away from the cops, remember?” Maggie blurted out.

“Right, but we just need an in so we can make a phone call from there. I just want the caller ID to match up,” Evie explained.

“I don’t know anyone,” Derek said.

“Well, if anyone can think of a way for us to use the phone at the police station without raising suspicion, let’s keep that in mind,” Evie said. “Did you guys find out anything else about Mr. Chandler’s case that might be useful?”

“Not really,” Ana said. “We know that the gun was not found. A jacket with Mrs. Chandler’s blood was discovered in Mr. Chandler’s car and he didn’t have a solid alibi, but we’re not finding out anything new. We need something personal. Something no one else knows.”

A knock at the door interrupted the conversation, startling everyone in the room. Evie cautiously approached the door, reaching for the baseball bat she kept in the main closet. Derek walked next to her, nodding at her with understanding, flexing his fingers in anticipation.

Evie stood up on her tiptoes, squinting through the peephole, when a glimmer of sandy blonde hair caught her attention, as Kelsey Chandler peered back at her with a confused stare. Evie unlocked the door and swung it open, arching her eyebrow with suspicion. “Kelsey?”

“Evie? Do you live here?” Kelsey asked, tilting her head and staring at Derek with a bewildered look spreading across her face.
