Chapter Seventeen

Canoeing With Nancy

Nancy was waiting in front of the store when Dan pulled into the truck-loading zone. She ran to the Corvette, leaped onto the boot, and slid into the seat.

“That how you do it?” she asked.

“Long as you don’t scratch the paint,” Dan said pulling from the curb.

“Paint? Isn’t the fiberglass look intentional?”

“Okay, it’s a bit faded.” He pulled into traffic. “But someday—”

“Are your ‘some day’s like your ‘tomorrows’?”

“What do you mean?”

“They never come.”

“Take liberties getting in my car, and then insult me!”

“OH! Like you were going to open the door for me.”

“No, I planned it. So I could watch those fine legs.”

Nancy smiled.

After several blocks, Dan assured himself he wasn’t being followed. He then drove to Whitewater River Park boat launch. He parked in a gravel lot, and pointed Nancy to a clapboard shed. Folding back the double doors, he stepped in. “We’ll find what we need in here.”

Nancy peeked in. “Ech! Dingy, musty hideaway.”

The fiberglass roof allowed some light. Canoe racks lined both sides. Dan unlocked a chain from a wood-spar canoe. He pulled a duffle from under it and lugged it outside. Returning he shouldered the canoe, carrying it outside Indian style.

“How come you rate the fancy one?”

“It’s mine. I rent storage. Can you drag the bag over to the dock?”

Nancy tugged at it. “I’ll manage.”

Dan put the boat in the water and transferred paddles, life vests, and a fishing tackle box. He returned to the shed for fishing poles. Nancy reclined in the bow against two flotation cushions.

“Make yourself at home. That red tipped paddle’s your size.”

“Paddle! Don’t do paddles.”

Dan stepped in, kneeled, and paddled away from the dockside into a large channel.

“Wanna try your luck?” Dan asked.

“I am, Officer Black.”

“You gonna to let up on the ‘Officer thing anytime soon?”

“Probably, but it takes some getting used to.”

“You’re over it, or you wouldn’t be here.”

She puckered and blew him a kiss. “Keep the smelly fish stuff in your end of the boat.”

Floating along with the current, Dan casted and retrieved, but his mind wasn’t on fishing.

“This the way you spend your afternoons?” Nancy asked.

“I try to get away a couple times a week. Helps me unwind. Sometimes it’s my motorcycle or golf.”

“I can see how tension could build. I imagine with each arrest you get tighter.”

“It’s not that dramatic.”

“Oh yeah? What’s the burn out rate for cops?”

“Burn out? I don’t know, but most hang in ’til retirement.”

“People are like clocks. You wind the mainspring too much – SNAP!”

Snap! Burn out! The words evoked bad memories: A body lying in a bloody hallway, an officer crumpled on the garage floor. She’s right. I’ve seen too many drop out by their own hand. Unable to cope with an unrelenting evil’s presence.

Nancy flipped water at him with a twig. “Hey! I’m still here,” she grouched. “Where’d you go?”

‘Oh, just trying to imagine a world that didn’t need cops.
