I got home later than I had planned, with the piece of paper with the lawyer’s number burning in my pocket. I had wanted to phone him from home, where my mother couldn’t hear me. That plan was smoke now as she had grilled me about my training sessions with Frank. There was no way in this world I was telling my mom that I had an upcoming fight with a psychopath. I had told her about Daniel instead and his offer. Thankfully, that had incensed her so much she temporarily forgot about hounding me into telling her about my new eating plan.

Alicia coming home with her usual cheery attitude had brightened the living room. After saying hello to us all, she had immediately launched into her day at college, and I had managed to avoid any more of my mom’s prying questions as Alicia took all of her attention. Little sisters were a blessing in disguise sometimes.

After feeding and bathing Steele, we settled down to watch some TV. Well, I watched the TV as he dozed in my arms. Mom had suggested we stop picking him up, but as I dipped down and kissed his head, I selfishly held him longer. My mind backtracked to this afternoon and Daniel Morgan’s offer to buy him. Like he was a commodity. My hand tightened around my mug of coffee as I thought of anyone trying to take my son from me. I glanced down at him again and saw that he was fast asleep. Taking in his tiny features, I sighed before I reluctantly stood and put him in his carrycot.

“No one’s taking you off me, little man,” I promised him as I straightened his mitts. He had been scratching his face, and mom had him armed with mitts almost instantly. He lay on his back, his head to the side, one arm above his head, the other up by his face. He sleeps the same way Lela does, I noted. He had her nose too. I considered him for a long moment, looking for my features. Mom said he looked exactly like I did as a baby. Even with my son in front of me, I was still of the opinion most babies looked the same. Small and defenceless.

I went and got my iPad from my bedroom and googled the firm that Malcolm had recommended. Adams & Roberts—a family law firm. I snorted in contempt when I realised that neither Adams or Roberts were related. They had one of those “our staff” pages, and I read up on the guy I was phoning tomorrow. Okay, it said he was highly successful and had a wife and young family. That probably helped him relate to his clients, I mused. I stared at his picture for too long, wondering if he had the look of a guy who was going to fight for my rights to custody of my son.

I then looked up custody rights in Colorado. I had never needed to know about it before, and it pissed me off that I needed to know about it now.
