Iâd started out patrolling with Eff tonight, which seemed to be our usual strategy, but a quick text from War had sent Eff running in the direction of Preservation Hall. A street performer was getting the shit kicked out of him outside the historic building, and War was having some trouble with crowd control. Death and Dem were closer to Lafitteâs, the historical blacksmith shop turned bar, and there would be no way theyâd get there fast enough to help. I knew Eff hated leaving me on my own, but the Lavender Line was calm for now, and I figured I could handle it by myself for a bit. Well, calm for Mardi Gras standards, which wasnât chill in the least bit, but I didnât see anyone actively getting murdered nearby.
I wove in and out of the gay bars, mindful to avoid vomiting drunks and a few leering straight men. I always hated the predatory sort of men who insisted on trying to pick up women from gay bars. It was like they were actively trying to ruin every opportunity women had for fun. As if on cue, I heard one of the aforementioned straight men catcall a group of college girls outside Bourbon Pub Parade, and the girls warily crossed the street to get away from him. Just because I was patrolling for demons didnât mean I couldnât help in other ways, so I made sure to shoulder check him roughly as I walked past. He went sprawling onto the pavement, and I breezed past, doing my best to ignore the dirty look he shot me. Luckily, he had the good sense to stay down even as his spilled whiskey sour poured out onto the sidewalk.
I made sure to ping my location every few blocks for Eff and War, hoping theyâd come to me once they were done dealing with their fray, though I kept close to the Lavender Line and doubled back a few times. I kept my eyes peeled on my surroundings, but it was hard not to enjoy the night a bit. My hips swayed from the music and cheers that pumped loudly out of numerous open doors and windows, and the oppressive humidity actually wasnât so bad for once. It was a bittersweet feeling. On any other year, I would have been slinging drinks at the Abbey or prowling the streets with Hecate, having a grand old time. Even the seediness of Mardi Gras had always appealed to me. It was an added insult that Lucifer had taken this from me as well. My business, my pleasure, all of it.
In the distance, sirens were drawing closer, but they didnât quite put me on edge. Emergencies were a regular occurrence during Mardi Gras. It wasnât just the demons who were raising hell. People didnât need too much of a push to cause harm. Bar fights, sexual assaults, gang violence, you name it. It all hit its peak during Nawlinsâ busiest two weeks out of the year.
