Chapter Twelve

Semjah warned Katarina about his uncle, ensuring she at least knew what she was getting into if she wanted to continue visiting his family with him.

“I’m not worried about that at all,” she assured him as they cuddled in bed that night. “Men like him don’t scare me. I know you’ll always be there to protect me. And I want to see your family again. I love them. And I want to be included in every part of your life.”

“I want that, too,” Semjah told her. “There’s no one else I’d rather have by my side.”

So, they continued to visit Semjah’s family as they grew closer as a couple. They spent a year wrapped in happy memories as Semjah advanced further in his career, and he and Katarina moved in together.

Life was going just as he wished. So, Semjah finally decided he was ready for the next step. He was prepared to take an enormous risk to secure the future he wanted.

One weekend, he packed a suitcase for Katarina and surprised her with a mini vacation. She loved surprises and was delighted when he told her he was taking her somewhere special.

After hours of driving, the coast came into view, revealing gorgeous stretches of white sand and tumbling sapphire water. Cute beachy shops caught Katarina’s attention until they finally pulled into a more isolated area, where they pulled into the driveway of a luxury beach house.

The artsy décor delighted Katarina the moment they walked inside. Its island-like vibe was a taste of what was to come as Semjah thought of plans for a longer future vacation with her. The loft was cozy and comforting, while the bedroom, with its gold-framed bed, set the stage for romance. The sauna, hot tub, and pool were luxuries they eagerly anticipated, but they decided to stretch their legs by walking to the beach first.

Semjah took Katarina’s hand as they walked under the stars and moonlight, past the tall grass and shells, their feet leaving prints in the soft, fine sand. And for a moment, he thought about how impermanent those footprints would be, just like life. He only had a finite amount of time. And he wanted to make the most of it with the woman he knew was his soulmate.

So, as they stopped and looked at the dark waves stretching out to meet the horizon, Semjah turned to her.

“I love you, Katarina,” Semjah said softly. Then his voice grew more intense and passionate. “Since you came into my life, you’ve made everything better. You inspire me daily, blowing me away with every little thing you do.

“My whole heart is yours; I know it was meant for you. And I want to give you all my future moments. I want to build a life with you. I want to devote my life to you if you’ll have me.” Semjah got down on one knee and pulled out the little box with the ring he had spent weeks agonizing over, wanting to ensure it was perfect for her.
