At you? Nope. Myself? Yeah. Daniel? Hell yeah. But you and me? We’re good. You should get some sleep. Don’t you have to be in at seven?

Yeah. Seven-to-five shift. You?

Same. Talk tomorrow?

Sure. Goodnight.

Sweet dreams.

I smiled as I set my phone aside. I felt a little more relaxed and sleepy now, knowing we were good. Maybe I actually would be able to sleep after all.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENTS

MARCY

Iwas already at my desk Wednesday morning when Angel walked in, two steaming cups of coffee in his hands. “For me?” I asked, hopeful.

Angel handed one over, his lips quirking up in a smile. “Of course. How long you been here?” He sat down at his desk and leaned back in his chair as he took a sip.

I raised the cup to my lips and gulped the warm goodness, my eyes closing at the heavenly nectar. “So good,” I murmured and then looked over at him. “Got in about thirty minutes ago. I didn’t get much sleep and wanted to get a jump start this morning. Didn’t even stop for coffee, which was a bad idea.”

Angel chuckled. “That is always a bad idea. Coffee should always come first.” He winked. “So what’s on the agenda for today?”

“I’m looking into the Serpents and their affiliates.”

Angel’s eyebrow quirked up. “Why?”

“As I was going over things at home yesterday, I started thinking that maybe we’ve looked at this the wrong way. Selene wasn’t the only woman from that MC club that Grant and Sam kidnapped and trafficked. So maybe one of the Serpents or someone who was connected to them found out what was going on and is now going after the cops?”

“Not a bad hypothesis. How can I help?”

“There’s a lot of names here. I’ve gotten through about four of them. Wanna take half the list? These are just the Serpents, but they were affiliated with another, smaller, MC club as well, one called—” I glanced at my notes, “the Sidewinders.”

“Let’s get through the Serpents first, then we’ll look at the others. Sound like a plan?”

“Yup.” I passed him a sheet of paper with a list of names.

We spent the next few hours running down each and every member. Most were still in prison serving life sentences, but there were a handful who’d been released on parole. Of those, three had been killed, two were no longer in the US, and four were missing. That could mean they were dead or had managed to change their names and were either still living here in California or had moved God knew where. If they were still in California, it was possible one of them was out there getting revenge for Selene and the other women.

That meant I needed to have another conversation with her. I turned to Angel. “Hey, I’m going to call Selene. See if she can tell me about these four. Wanna start on the Sidewinders?”

“Sure thing.” Angel took the list I offered him and turned back to his computer.

I glanced at the clock. It was going on eleven thirty.
