âThis looks like a good spot.â Michael parked the car down the road from Build-a-Floor. âThe closing time on the storeâs business card says six oâclock.â He checked his watch. âOne more hour to go before they close up shop.â
âThree company vans are parked out front,â I said. âChuck has to be driving one of them.â
Michael reached for a pair of binoculars from his satchel in the back seat. âHere. These should help.â
We took turns surveying the parking lot. One by one, the vehicles pulled out, until only one company van and a red pick-up truck remained.
It was almost closing time. Michael sat back, eyes closed and ears plugged in to the music on his phone while I looked through the binoculars.
The front doors of Build-a-Floor swung open, and a man wearing a white baseball cap walked out. He slid behind the wheel of the pick-up truck and drove off. I kept my eyes on the front door and waited for a sign of Chuck.
Our car windows were down and the air hung heavy with humidity. A glance upward confirmed that dark clouds had gathered overhead. Rain would only impede our surveillance. Damn!
Ten more minutes passed before Chuck emerged.
âThereâs Chuck.â I poked Michael in the arm.
He jolted upright.
Chuck locked the front door of Build-a-Floor, then hopped into the white cargo van and drove out of the parking lot. We waited a few seconds, then followed him up the road.
We were surprised when he took the highway and exited at Ostfield.
âMaybe heâs stopping for a drink or a bite to eat with friends,â Michael said.
But Chuck drove right through town.
We almost lost sight of him at a main intersection when we hit a red light. Luckily, the traffic was light, and we glimpsed Chuckâs van as he left the city core and hit the highway again.
Rain began to fall. Scattered drops immediately turned into heavy beads of hail. The bombarding sound inside the car was deafening.
âKeep track of him with the binoculars,â Michael shouted above the noise, peering hard through the windshield wipers struggling against the barrage. âThis freak weather is only going to make things harder. Damn!â
Hail pelted the car, making it almost impossible to see Chuckâs van. We nearly missed his right-hand signal when he took the exit onto Briarâs Road.
âThere wonât be much traffic on this road,â Michael said.
I grew anxious. âWhat if he notices weâre following him?â
âDonât worry. Iâll stay back.â
Our journey ended minutes later when Chuck turned left onto a path bordered by a thick forest. Michael drove past his turn-off point and made a U-turn, then parked on the side of the road.
âStay here,â he said. âIâll go check it out.â
âFat chance. Iâm going with you.â I grabbed our waterproof rain jackets from the back seat and handed him his.
It was a short, muddy walk along the side of the road to the path where Chuck had turned off. My running shoes would need a good cleaning after this little venture, as would Michaelâs.
