I was at Sebastian’s apartment a scant half hour later, trying to look appropriately uncertain as Nate ushered me into the apartment. Russell Hayes was standing by the window again, and he shot me a look of pure contempt. When I smiled tentatively, his disgust deepened. He looked away, shaking his head.

It took only a moment to realize how perfect that was. People who thought less of you tended not to see you at all. My curves had taught me that much. Russell wanted to think I was just the stupid chick screwing Dominick Ellison? Let him. I had a feeling he was going to be on my list soon, too.

“Catriona.” Sebastian was there, clasping one of my hands in his. He drew me to the couch, eyes very warm, and I tried not to shiver at how similar he was to Dominick in so many ways.

“Hello.” I tried to look up at him as if I needed his help, as if I trusted him even a little bit. To my dismay, it was a lot easier than it should be. Sebastian had a way of looking at you that assured you that he would be your savior, that you could trust him completely. That he cared. “I, uh…thank you for talking to Nate.”

“Of course.” He squeezed my hands and smiled at me. “It’s difficult to describe the effect Dominick has on people. I can hardly believe it myself when I’m away from him, and then every time I see him…” He shook his head regretfully, trailing off.

“You think he must know the answers to everything,” I finished, without meaning to.

“Yes. Exactly.” He leaned in, shaking his head regretfully. “It is good to hear someone say it out loud.”

I looked away, swallowing. What was happening here? Sebastian was…untrustworthy. Wasn’t he? I couldn’t let myself trust him yet, anyway. I bit my lip and searched for something to say. “So, you said you needed to see me?”

“Yes. I understand you may have seen Dominick since you and I met.” There was no recrimination in his eyes. “Were you able to find anything?”

“Yes.” I admitted it before I had time to think, and found myself stumbling over my words. “That is—I mean—I did, but it wasn’t…the right thing.”

“Oh?” He frowned, his confusion seeming genuine.

I took a moment to remind myself that I wasn’t on his side, I wasn’t on Dominick’s side. I wasn’t even on Nate’s side anymore. I was going to keep everyone in the dark for now. I was on my own. I took a deep breath and shook my head at him. “It was just old papers, nothing that looked like it had to do with Ellison Corp at all.” I shook my head again, shrugging regretfully. “I tried, I really did. And I went back today, but I didn’t get any time alone.”

“You went back?” Nate’s voice rose.

“Nate—” I turned my head.

“You know he’s screwing with you, and you’re just letting him—” His voice had gotten thick. “You let him do…whatever he wants to you.
