CHAPTER 13
Axe
Similar to me, Zaid liked mornings, and even earlier appointments. Though I had known him for many years, I had never been to his home. There was no need, and I respected a manâs privacy, which I knew, like me, Zaid valued more than most. To find that he lived in the terrain at the foot of Mount Charleston wasnât a surprise. In the soft light of dawn, I parked the van along the driveway, gravel crunching under the wheels. Stepping out of the van, Demi flicked the hair out of her face, then zipped up her pink hoodie.
We went around a small plot of succulents to the entrance.
âHow do you know this guy again?â Demi asked.
âWe worked together a few times when I was doing a job down here.â
âOh.â
Curiosity and disturbance always danced together in Demiâs face. She wanted to know everything, and yet she knew that the more she understood, the harder it would be to hold onto herself, that purity that still lurked within her. Luckily, when it came to Zaid, there wouldnât be anything to worry about. No fights. No death. It was simply a discussion with an associate, then an eighteen-hour drive back to Sage City.
I knocked and Demi shoved her hands in her pockets. The door opened, revealing a brunette with curled hair and bright eyes. A rose gold infinity collar was tight around her neck.
âHi,â she said hesitantly, looking up at me. âWho are you?â
âAxe,â I said. âAn old associate of Zaidâs.â I tilted my head. âYou must be Heather.â
âI am,â she nodded and turned to Demi. âAnd you are?â
âDemi,â she said. The two women shook hands.
âCome on,â she said, motioning for us to come inside. âIâll show you to the study.â
Zaid had creases near his eyes from age, and matching scars on both sides of his face, striking through his eyes. One of them was a shade lighter than his skin tone, while the other was tinted pink, which meant it had to be new.
âAxel Adler,â he said. âItâs been a long time.â
âQuite a while,â I said.
This time, when I shook his hand, I gripped it firmly, hitting him on the shoulder, glad to see him. He had been a decent contact when I needed help down here, and it was hard to find good work. Zaid nodded to Heather, exchanging a silent communication.
âCome with me,â Heather said to Demi, pulling on her arm. âIâll show you our garden out back.â
Demi looked at me, and I gave a subtle nod. The two of them disappeared, and I turned back to Zaid.
âWhat brings you to this side of the country?â Zaid asked. We took seats in the middle of the room, along two chaise lounges facing each other. The room was large, with bookshelves along the walls and a fireplace roasting to the side. It wasnât surprising that Zaid had a modern, well-decorated home. He had always liked his spaces neat.
âKnow anything about the Midnight Miles Corporation?â I asked.
Zaid closed his eyes, then opened them, spliced with a look of death.
