Chapter Four

July 16, 1979

A Staging Area Outside of Ramallah

The parking lot was deserted, as were the buildings surrounding it. Will Hessler sat in the front of the old sedan with Jacob Mitzak, waiting for Cain Ernst to arrive with the van they would be using to actually enter the city. On the drive up, Jacob had explained what it was in the beheading tape that had tipped both him and the Sayeret Matkal commander off.

A Blackhawk helicopter has a very distinct sound, and while it had been barely noticeable, both Jacob and Cain had heard the very faint sound of that helo in the background of the tape. They had also observed the likely time of day by the shadows being cast from the sun entering the lone window and the sound of the call to prayer that started toward the end of the tape. They also heard a very familiar crackling sound from the speakers broadcasting the call to prayer.

“We were doing an overflight on Ramallah two days ago, and I heard that same faulty speaker broadcasting the call to prayer at that same time.”

“Isn’t that a bit of a long shot?” Will asked.

Jacob had looked at Will hard for a moment and then turned his eyes back to the road.

“In this business, most of the time long shots are the only kind we get.”

In the area they had been flying over, and based upon the sunlight coming in the window, it could only be one building. Only one building was tall enough, and with enough units in it that the SOA (Sword of Allah) militia members could have a forward operating base set up and not be noticed.

Finally, Will saw the panel van pulling into the parking lot, and after it had rolled to a stop, Cain Ernst stepped out with another man. This man was much shorter than Cain and carried a large canvas bag.

Jacob and Will walked to meet them.

“Jacob, Will, this is Ravi Abend. He’s the new Kidon section leader for Box operations,” Cain said by way of introduction.

Jacob looked at Cain for a moment, then to Ravi and back to Cain.

“I’ll assume this guy is fully vetted,” Jacob said dryly.

“My people were on that raid a couple of weeks ago,” Ravi cut in. “I have a stake in this.”

Jacob understood and nodded.

Ravi set the canvas bag down on the ground and pulled out several compact Uzi submachine guns, and then passed them out to Jacob, Will, and Cain. Each man also took an Uzi compact pistol and holstered it on their belt, then covered the pistol and the Uzi with a large jacket.

“Colonel, I’m sorry if this is a stupid question, but why aren’t we bringing any of the Sayeret Matkal guys with us on this?” Will asked.

“You’re right, that is a stupid fucking question,” Cain snapped, and then relented. “Look, this kind of job, the bigger the team gets, the more likely we get spotted and end up in a street fight that we can’t win.
