Chapter Twenty-five

Saturday

First thing Saturday morning, Calladine rang Rocco and asked him to meet him at the Seddons’ place on the Hobfield.

“Young Killian’s not been altogether honest with us,” he said. “He knows a lot more than he’s told us about the gear Knowles was selling.”

“How do we play it? Want to take him down the station?”

Calladine nodded. “If he refuses to answer or gets edgy in any way, yes. A little time spent in the cells might make him see sense. I don’t know him well but I get the impression the lad’s not bad, just easily led.”

Killian’s mother answered the door in her dressing gown, peered warily up and down the street and then beckoned them inside. “It’s the weekend, don’t you lot ever give it a rest?”

“A word with Killian,” Calladine said.

She gave a furtive glance up the staircase. “He’s not here.”

“Mind if we look?”

“Look where you like but you won’t find him.”

Calladine nodded to Rocco. “Why the nerves this morning? Is it Killian?”

She pulled the dressing gown tighter round her slim body. “Everything’s fine. Killian’ll be back soon, I’ve no need to be nervous of anything, I’ve got my boys for protection.”

“Protection from what, Mrs Seddon?” he asked.

“He’s not here, sir,” Rocco called out. “And his bed’s not been slept in.”

“Where is he?” Calladine asked.

She burst into tears. “The truth is, I don’t know. I’ve not slept a wink. He got a call last night, went out and that’s the last I saw of him.”

“D’you know who the call was from?”

She shook her head.

“What time was this?”

“About nine. He said he wouldn’t be long so I waited up. After he’d been gone a couple of hours I rang him but his mobile was dead. Dean went out to look for him, he spoke to a few of the lads but no one had seen him.”

“Is there anywhere he’d go? To a friend’s house, perhaps?”

“He hangs about with Dean and before he got killed, Noah. I don’t like him hanging out with the estate lads, they’re trouble.”

Calladine was concerned. Killian knew about the missing stock, which meant he was involved. He might also be involved with those who took it. That put him perilously close to whoever killed Knowles and Noah.

“Where’s Dean now?” Calladine asked.

“The lad’s still in bed,” Rocco confirmed.

“Get him up,” Calladine said to his mother. “I need a word with him.”

Ten minutes later, a tousled-headed Dean yawned his way down the stairs. “Look, I don’t know what our Killian’s up to, but if I were him I’d be steering well clear of Barton and his mob.”

“What makes you say that?” Calladine asked. “Why would Barton intimidate Killian?”

“’Cause he’s got a loose mouth, can’t keep it shut.”

“Are you talking about the trainers and other stuff?” Calladine asked.

Dean nodded. “He should have stayed well away but he’s an idiot, just like Noah. Well perhaps not an idiot, but he’s far too easily led and he doesn’t see any harm in people. That can get you into big trouble round here.
