Chapter 24
Calladine gathered the team together in the incident room. âWeâve got two murders, linked we think by the fact that the killer used the same knife. But Iâm at a loss to see what Sean Barber and Frankie Halliwell had in common. All we have is a nickname of the villain, âStreet,â but weâve no idea who he is. None of the youngsters weâve spoken to will tell us anything about him.â Casting a wary eye towards the corridor to make sure Birch was nowhere in sight, he looked round the room. âTheories anyone?â
âFrankie and Sean could have upset the same dealer?â Alice postulated. âDrugs appear to be behind whatâs going on here.â
âNot with the Alder case, it isnât,â Calladine said. âAnd we donât have confirmation yet if Frankie was a user or not. Also, Iâve just been told by Dr Barrington that Frankie was pregnant. Iâm hoping DNA on the foetus will give us the identity of the father.â
âYou donât think the father was Barber then?â Rocco asked.
âIâve no idea. My instinct tells me no. But we need to know who Frankieâs friends were, who she knocked around with.â
âShe was in love with Billy Alder, sir,â Alice reminded him. âHe led her on as a cover for his relationship with Annie. Iâd say he was the prime suspect for father of the child.â
Ruth inclined her head. âCould Billy have killed Sean and Frankie? Sean because of what he and the other kids were up to, and Frankie because she threatened his plans.â
Alice nodded in agreement. âFrankie had texted Annie and threatened to tell Richard what was going on. Perhaps Billy silenced her?â
âIt is possible that Billy had something to do with Frankieâs murder, but he has no link to Sean that Iâm aware of,â Calladine told them. âHow are we doing with finding out who âStreetâ is?â
âNo one will say a word,â Rocco said. âWhich is odd. Kids arenât usually so loyal.â
Calladine thought for a moment. âUnless they are being threatened.â There was a short pause while they mulled this over, then he caught Ruthâs eye. âOr they donât know,â he said, realising that she was thinking along the same lines as him.
âDean Laycock is still in the cells,â Ruth reminded him. âLetâs find out if heâs ever met âStreetâ face to face.â
âIf he hasnât, then possibly none of them have. âStreetâ could be anyone, not necessarily someone their own age.â
Calladine got to his feet. âRuth, you and Rocco speak to Laycock again. Iâm going to have a word with Seanâs mother, see if she can help with any of this.â
* * *
Calladine decided to walk the short distance to Kat Barberâs house. It was easier than struggling to find somewhere to park when he got there. She was still off work organising Seanâs funeral, which was to be held at the end of the week.
âPeople have been very kind,â she said. âThe neighbours have organised a wake at the Wheatsheaf. One thing less to think about.â
âKat, do you know who Seanâs friends were?â
She sighed heavily.
