SUTTON

* * *

Sutton twisted the top off his beer and took a healthy slug. He’d been irritable since last night after Buckner went in foot pursuit and actually caught the guy.

That hadn’t been the plan at all. His intention was to have some gangsters rough her up a little, then he, Rudy, and Fish would come bail her out.

Instead, she’d captured a gangster and got a gun out of it too.

But that wasn’t why he was peeved. He couldn’t put his finger on it, but there was something hinky going on between his probationer and the suspect, Antonio Lima. It was like they had information he didn’t.

He moved over to stand in front of his kitchen sink and look outside. “Damn squirrels. They run across the side fence and make the dog next door go nuts.” I’m not sure who I’d pop first, the squirrel or the dog. Finally, the neighbor called in her dog.

He reconstructed the previous night and nailed down the moment when he felt things were off between the Lima and his partner.

She’d put him in the rear seat of the car, and when she’d turned around, she had that deer-in-the-headlights look—like he might have overheard something he shouldn’t have. But what would a hardened gangster have to say to a boot cop?

Then he got a crazy idea. What if she’d somehow hired Lima to run from her and let her catch him? Then to really make herself look good, what if she’d given him a gun to toss?

The more he thought it about it, the more plausible it seemed. He’d told her they were going to Lanark Park, and when he got back to their black and white after taking a piss, she’d been on her phone. She could have been texting Lima.

He slid his phone out of his pocket and dialed.

“What do you want asshole?”

That was Rudy’s standard way to answer his phone calls. “You and Fish are working tonight, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Listen, you know that gangster Antonio Lima we bagged last night?”

“Yeah.”

“See if you can find him and shake him down again tonight. I got a funny feelin’ about him.”

“What are you looking for?”

“I’m not sure. He just seemed too relaxed with Buckner.”

“What do you mean?”

“It was almost as if they were plotting against me.”

Rudy sighed. “Look, Duane, I didn’t want to say anything in front of Fish, but this crusade you’ve got against your partner is gonna get you in trouble. She’s not unsafe or whacky like you thought. She’s done well for somebody who only has a few days out of the academy.”

“Are you done?”

“Yeah. I don’t think you’re listening.”

“You’re right. I’m not. Try to find the cholo and mention Buckner. See how he reacts. Can you do that?”

“Yeah, I’ll do it. But he may be holed up since you pinched him last night.”

“Try. That’s all I ask.”
