The Polyvagal Theory and the Search for Better Mental States
When we are aware of just how complex the nervous system can be, we can better understand how to deal with many challenges that come our way, especially when it comes to mental health.
In recent years, there has been a great increase in the understanding of mental health and its problems. What was once considered a subject that would usually receive a response such as “just get some sleep and you’ll feel better” has now turned into a field that requires careful study.
Mental health is not something people can ignore. The polyvagal theory helps us deal with our mental health by understanding the nervous system, with particular focus on the vagus nerve.
According to Dr. Porges, when we stop taking care of our nervous system, we start creating imbalances in our body. This causes us to deal with certain situations poorly. For example, remember the earlier situation of the young man who ended up nearly having a panic attack when he interacted with someone he didn’t recognize? One of the things that was responsible for worsening the situation was the fact that the young man’s nervous system was not in its peak state. Of course, one can never say that the main reason for panic attacks, PTSD, and other mental health issues is because of nervous system imbalances. Because that would be crazy (no pun intended). However, that is one of the causes for it.
By understanding how the vagus nerve can actually help improve our mood, we can use that to our advantage. Along with the nervous system, we can try and encourage the body to not go into fight-or-flight mode when something triggers a traumatic experience.
The science is still young and there is so much to find out. In the past 100 years, there hasn’t been much evolution in the work concerning the nervous system. It is why the discovery of the many importance of the vagus nerve is a much more recent endeavor. With each new discovery, the science gets better and so does the way in which we take care of our lives.
For example, when we take care of the vagus nerve, we start to improve the vagal tone. This improvement allows the nervous system to manage the heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and other factors, bringing them to a normal state. This process promotes positive emotions in us. When we have positive emotions, then we can better deal with the negative emotions. In other words, we are better equipped to handle various mental states.
Remember that this is not the only solution for mental problems. It is only one solution or variable.
