Chapter Sixteen

BRANNA

Everything is black. Cold. Distant. Sound is muffled. My lover is near, in the darkness. Then the light flickers, and I see him so clearly now. So beautiful. How lucky am I, that he should want me?

My hand rises to my chest and my thumb runs along the smooth contours of the wooden pendant I wear around my neck. Foolish business, falling in love with a cú sídhe, but how could I not? A male who finally accepts me for who and what I am, with no thought for himself…

I take another step into the room.

His head jerks up and he turns. “Branna,” he says, and his voice is like honey. “The blade is the only thing keeping pressure on the wound.”

What?

Confusion twists his features. “I can’t. You do it.”

Do what?

“Bean sídhe. There!”

Bean sídhe? What are they talking about? Is someone dying? And then I feel the sticky wetness on my chest.

It’s me.

I can’t breathe. I can’t get enough air.

I can’t breathe… I can’t breathe…

“She’s going to stop breathing. Don’t let her die.”

“Stay with me, mo rún.”

I feel the presence of a body. Close. Warm breath on my face. And then another voice.

“No, Aiden! The curse! Let me do it!”

The body near mine is ripped away. The pleasant heat leaves with it. Then there’s someone else hovering over me. A friend. But not the one I want.

Before I can protest, that body disappears, too.

There’s a gruesome crunching sound.

The smell of fresh blood.

A howl of pain.

A female’s shriek.

Then lips on mine. Warm. Beautiful. Right. I throw myself at that body only because I can’t think of what else to do. If I just hold on tight enough, he’ll stay. I’ll stay. No one will leave. We’ll be together. Finally together.

A hand slips behind my neck and holds me tight against the sweetest mouth I’ve ever tasted.

Air rushes into my lungs, and a strange new heat blooms in my chest then burns away the púca ice shields. Lust, passion, and impatience rise again, demanding that I take more. More, more, more, before it’s too late.

“Branna,” a voice groans. “Finally.”

And then an explosion of pain tears the voice away from me, just as it rips me from my dream.
