The French University Mission to Brazil,
Racial Theory, and the Formation of a
New Social Science Paradigm
Andrew R. Dausch
Abstract
In his article, âThe French University Mission to Brazil, Racial Theory, and the Formation of a New Social Science Paradigm,â Andrew R. Dausch builds upon previous analyses of the French University Mission to Brazil in the 1930s by emphasizing the transnational dimensions of the exchange. It examines the institutions, structures, politics, individuals, and ideas within both the Brazilian and French cultural fields as well as the changes produced within both fields as a result of this exchange. Through employing this transnational lens and looking at specific engagements between Brazilian and French thinkers, the paper advances the argument that the French University Mission has a complex legacy. The admiration of the French faculty for Brazilâs intellectuals makes it difficult to assess the mission as a simple case of cultural imperialism. Despite this positive reception, there is also evidence of a colonial mindset at work in Brazil making the mission ambivalent and complex.
