Anguis was right over the camp, trying to track the Chinese dragon, when several more spotlights came on. Rynn, watching through Anguis, noticed the difference right away. These were in different colors, not white, and they seemed to have magic imbued in their beams.

Cries came out from below and, through Anguis' eyes, Rynn saw several people point up at Anguis, who should've been unable to be seen. Gunshots followed shortly thereafter, bullets sparking as they struck the clockwork dragon and ricocheted off.

Oh hell no, you're not shooting at my friend, she thought.

She'd been circling high above the field alongside the camp, the same one she'd seen Michael go to ground in. Now she targeted one of the men shooting at Anguis and dove. If what the clockwork dragon had said was correct, then they wouldn't have any more of the rounds for their rocket launchers that they'd hurt her with before. Anguis said he'd eaten them all.

But if Michael was right and he saw a Chinese dragon, then who knows what other resources they may have borrowed from the fake UN guys, Rynn thought. Either way, they're not going to be shooting at Anguis if I can help it, and I can.

The camp was now under alert, well lit and there were people scrambling to their positions. Rynn spotted a machine gun, one mounted in such a way as to be able to fire into the sky. She also saw what looked like artillery, or maybe anti-aircraft weaponry.

Which makes sense after they saw me the other day. I'll stay under its range though, I don't believe they can depress its barrel too far.

“Anguis, get out of there,” Rynn said. “Don't risk yourself.”

“They can't hurt me Rynn, their bullets just tickle,” he replied.

“Anti-aircraft guns, Anguis.”

With that warning, she saw the clockwork dragon put on speed and make a beeline directly away from the camp. He'd had an encounter with anti-aircraft guns back in the war, one in which he came off on the worst end of the deal. He knew that those guns were even more powerful now, so he wanted nothing to do with them.

Rynn came in on the level, skimming close to the ground without going into a stoop. She was planning to hit the machine gun first since there were already people manning that and the anti-aircraft gun wasn't manned yet. She went flying by, regretfully loosing a burst of her flame breath at the machine gun and the people manning it. She knew Michael wanted to save as many of the Wizard Corps as he could, but they weren't going to be able to save all of them.

As she streaked across the camp, gaining a little elevation, she was struck from below by something. She nearly crashed, avoiding it at the last moment by slowing and gaining elevation. But something was holding on, slowing her. She could feel the strain in her wings as she tried to lift with the extra weight.

Whatever it is is a hell of a lot heavier than Michael was, she thought.
