Chapter Nine

Leo guzzled water from his bottle without even breathing, his thirst overpowering him. The cold liquid quenched and soothed his dry, parched tongue and throat. He took off his Stetson hat and dried the sweat from his brow. He had been working diligently for the past two hours stacking the hay for the cattle.

He sat on the bench resting against the outside of the barn as he enjoyed his break in the shade. Shuffling footsteps approaching notified him that someone was coming. He turned to see Chandler and Bane meandering toward him.

“You guys are taking a break, too?” he asked with a grin.

Chandler nodded, slumping into the space beside him. The wooden bench creaked with his weight. “Yeah, this summer heat is torture.” He cracked the seal on his water bottle and took huge swallows.

Bane rested his leg on the side of the bench then opened one of the two bottles he held and poured the liquid over his face. It ran down to his cotton shirt, dampening it and making it cling to his muscular biceps and chest. “It’s too hot to work. I think we should cut this workday short and head to town for some burgers and beers at the Dotson Pub.”

“Yeah, that’s a good idea,” Chandler agreed. He gazed at Leo. “What do you say? Care to spend some time with your annoying alpha brothers?”

Although Leo would enjoy their company, he was in no mood to eat. His queasy stomach rolled over at the mention of food. “No, you guys go. I’m not hungry. I’ll finish stacking the hay and head home and rest.”

Bane stared at Chandler before glancing at Leo. “You, not hungry? Is that even possible?”

“You sure you’re okay? You seem to have lost weight,” Chandler said while observing Leo’s body.

Leo tapped his stomach, which made the queasiness rise to his throat. “I’m dieting.” He grinned.

Chandler and Bane’s eyes popped out while their jaws hung open. “You’re joking, right?” Bane asked.

Leo frowned. The tension around him was mounting. His brothers didn’t seem to accept his comment. “No, I’m not,” he reiterated.

Bane rolled his eyes. “Why on Earth would you want to diet? You don’t have an ounce of fat on you. You’re all muscle!”

Chandler shook his head. “You sure this dieting is voluntary?”

“Yeah, why?” he asked, his frown deepening.

“I don’t know. Maybe it’s something more, like…the Change?” Chandler stated while crossing his arms over his burly chest.

There it was. With dread, Leo had been waiting for this moment to arrive. Sooner or later his alpha brothers would have suspected something. After all, they both had already gone through the Change and could spot the telltale signs. Although Bane hadn’t experienced nausea when he went through it, just frayed nerves and unbounded horniness, Chandler had similar symptoms as Leo. He recalled Chandler’s weight loss the weeks before he approached the Change.

“No, it’s not.” He rolled up his sleeve and showed him his birthmark, which was cleverly covered with makeup. The shade they sat in acted like the perfect concealment, too.
