Olezka

The disappointment read clear on her face. Her sultry smile and sparkling eyes dimmed, but my words were true. I wanted her to go back to her place, to go somewhere safe and spend the night there.

She chewed her bottom lip, curling her hair around her ear, and for a moment, a pang of guilt went through me. Perhaps I should’ve been nicer about it.

Perhaps.

But she hadn’t begged for our protection so we could be nice, and Sacha had been well and nice enough. He had all but slept with her right in front of her dorm building so everyone could see. He had touched her, showed a weakness, made us all vulnerable. If anyone had been paying attention, they now had the key to our entire downfall.

Luckily, college students tended to be rather unaware. It’s how I got away with my career, skimming bank accounts of a few dollars here and there. Most times, the students assumed they had forgotten a charge, forgotten the gas station stop or the errant late-night take-away order.

For the stakes of the game, I hadn’t said what I really wanted because what I really wanted was inappropriate.

What I really wanted was to advance to the next step of whatever was transpiring between us. When I heard her voice, my heart had galloped, and when I laid eyes on her, it skipped a few beats. It pounded erratically in my chest, leaving me short of breath like no one had ever done before.

When our eyes first connected, the first day I saw her on campus, a surge of desire had gone through me, and it happened again at the library. It happened again as I shooed Elena away and ushered Gabriella to my worktable, and again when she abandoned her own work and approached me, sat in my lap, and asked about coding.

She hadn’t been feigning interest, either. Her curiosity was real, and her capacity to learn and tweak from the moment she touched the keyboard was the part that really excited me.

Her brain. Her brain was the part that excited me, and the rest of the package was damn good, too.

“Go on,” I encouraged, tipping my head towards the computer screen.

She ran the script. It was a complex script now. First, it produced a number from one to ten, flashing it in the second window.

It was a six.

The only number worse than a six was a five. The logical guess, of course, would’ve been low, but statistically speaking, it was close either way.

She groaned. “Wow. Um, okay I’m going high.”

Of course she would go high.

She
