one of this made sense.
Magic attracted those creatures, something I never knew I had until today. I still didnât know if I had magic, but according to Zelena, they sensed it in me. Those creatures freezing couldnât have been because of me. There had to be an explanation for those creatures freezing in place. I couldnât comprehend what had happened in the moments before the creature charged at me. I locked up and I couldnât move. My body went cold, my blood chilling over from the fear or whatever the magic in my system was. My skin pulled against my bones, as if it were being ripped apart, but it lasted for a moment. Deep down in my stomach, something churned with a need to be released. Once everything settled and returned to normal, the creature stood frozen before me, with its arms outstretched, prepared to attack.
We were waiting in the Healing Quarters for Reya to come and assist us in resolving this situation. Zelena paced the length of the small room. Occasionally sheâd stop and stare at me, her eyes blazing. She was angry, whether at me or at the situation altogether, I did not know. But I knew she was questioning me, and whether I had been truthful about having magic. I was questioning myself too.
Maldova outlawed magic after the Blood Wars. For four hundred years, they purged magic out of our kingdom. They went door to door, killing anyone who had magic in their system. They couldnât get everyone. I was sure it was easy to hide their magic from the court. It was difficult to determine the methods Maldovaâs kings employed to track individuals with magical abilities. The old kings were angry to lose a war that they wanted, and they took it out on magic wielders. For my family, though, they were careful with whom they married. No magic had ever touched our bloodline; not even the old kings had magic in their bloodline. Something must have gone wrong for this to happen.
I couldnât talk to my parents about this. They would kill me or even put me in isolation again. I didnât know how I could handle this, raising any alarms. What happens if I were frightened again, and Iâ iced someone? I thought about how my mother would react if she saw it. Would she curse me, or would she still love me? Those questions played through my mind as the door to the room opened.
Shera and Osirus entered the room. Osirus held a shocked expression as if heâd seen a ghost, though with recent events, I expected nothing less of his facial expression. Yet, Shera looked the exact opposite. Her emerald eyes glowed, a small smirk on her face as she took a seat at the table in the back of the room.
âWhatâs wrong?â Zelena asked, her golden eyes searching Osirus.
âWe were going to take care of the Xax, but the second you left, it broke into hundreds of little pieces and then melted to the ground.
