Costa Rican Crocs

Costa Rica is one of my favorite places on the planet. It is a small country—about the size of West Virginia. But it has a ton of different wild animals and habitats!

If you want to see crocs, Costa Rica is awesome! Two species are found in its rivers and swamps: the American crocodile (the same species found in Florida) and the spectacled caiman. The spectacled caiman looks like it’s wearing spectacles, or glasses. That’s how it got its name.

By early the next morning, the water was really low. It was only about a foot deep in the center. I expected to see 13 crocodiles lying in the mud, waiting to be caught.

Instead, I saw nothing. Zip! Zero crocodiles!

I had seen them with my own eyes just the day before. Where had they gone? Maybe they had walked away, looking for water.

Had they crawled all the way to the river, a mile away? I wanted to find out. I walked along the muddy shore. I looked for croc tracks. Tracks would tell me which way they’d gone.

Big croc footprints are easy to see because, well, they are really, really big! Crocs have five toes on their front feet. They have four toes on their webbed back feet. A big croc can have a foot that is more than 12 inches long! It’s hard to miss those monster tracks.

Crocs also drag their tails when they get up and walk. When you’re tracking crocs on land, you’ll see a series of footprints. The prints will have a line between them. That line is made by the heavy tail as it drags behind.

I searched every inch of mud, but I couldn’t find a single footprint. Did those crazy crocs fly away? It was as if they had simply disappeared!
