To help me decide, I reviewed the list of sites that Skippy wanted to visit. Some of them sounded interesting, some of those were too dangerous to approach in my opinion. âHey, Skippy. I have a question about this list.â
His avatar appeared. âIf youâre asking why I didnât put them sites in alphabetical order, that is because-â
âThatâs not it. I see you listed sites in order by travel time, that was very helpful. My question is, why bother going to these sites at all?â
âYouâre kidding me, right? Jeez, I explained this. We have to know which of my memories are accurate and which-â
âNo, we donât.â
âNo?â He was flabbergasted, staring at me in disbelief. âDo you not understand what-â
âWhat I donât understand is why I should risk two starships, and over a hundred civilians, to figure out which electrons in your memory are recording the truth. We survived just fine for years without the memories you recovered.â
âFirst, my memory storage does not rely on electrons, dumdum. Second, we have not been âjust fineâ. We have been flying blind, not knowing-â
âHold on a moment, OK? I donât want to get in an argument, and I donât want you to think I donât care about how this affects you. My question is, how does this affect us? Iâm asking a practical question, you understand that? When we get back to Earth, I will have to answer a lot of questions about decisions I made out here. To prepare, I have to write up reports.â
âUgh. Joe, you hate writing reports to justify your actions.â
âYeah, but that doesnât mean I shouldnât do it. Iâve been thinking about this recently. If we risk our ships to verify your new memories, I need a reason how doing that is important to humanity.â
âDude, seriously, you canât see it?â
âNo, I canât. At this point, itâs ancient history, Skippy. We canât do anything to change the past, and I really donât see how what happened affects us now. We know the truth now. That doesnât change the fact that murderous aliens are coming to Earth, and your memories donât do anything to help us stop them. Does it?â
âNo,â he conceded, being grumpy about it.
âDo you see my problem?â
âNo. Maybe. Joe, is this your way of punishing me for what I did?â
âNo. No way. I forgave you. That was a low-down, rotten thing you did, but I understand why you did it, and I believe you are sincere about regretting your actions.â
âJoe, when I realized what I did, I regretted my whole freakinâ life.â
âRight. This has nothing to do with punishment.â
âOK. Listen, how about this? You talked about aliens coming to Earth, and not being able to stop them.â
âExactly. Thatâs why we have to bring as many people as we can to the Beta site.â
âThe Beta site wonât be safe, if other Elder AIs wake up.â
âI know that, Skippy. Thereâs no point worrying about that, because we canât do anything about that.â
âUm, Iâm not so sure about that.â
What he said next blew my mind.
