Chapter Twenty-One

During the 1972 Munich Olympic games, Giles was stationed in Germany. When Black September terrorists killed eleven Israeli athletes and coaches and one West German police officer, Giles’s airborne team had been on high alert, anxious for a fight, eager to stand by the Israelis. They hadn’t been allowed to fire so much as a water pistol.

Now, the largest Canadian Forces deployment on Canadian soil was underway. Close to twenty percent of the total Canadian Forces, including Kevin Giles and his airborne regiment, were training for deployment during the upcoming 1976 Montreal Summer Olympic Games.

This time, the show was in his country. The world would be watching how Canada handled security. Airborne was prepared, and Giles was ready to kill as many terrorists as he could. He’d heard rumors that Mossad had already inserted elite counter-terrorism teams in Montreal in case there was a repeat of Munich. Giles hoped this time would be the Israelis’ turn to sit on the sidelines. See how they liked it.

Suffield Base was hot and dry. Giles had spent the day repeating hostage rescue scenarios. He stumbled, exhausted, into his private room, a perk of a master sergeant. A note on his bed put an end to any idea of supper and a beer or two.

Dave Torres called. Will call back at 1900 hours.

Giles lay on his bed and closed his eyes.
