Chapter Thirty-Five

Darrell made his way back to the garage, noting another hooker, this one a short, voluptuous blonde, had replaced the girl who propositioned him earlier. He hurried past and when he hit the crosswalk, a muted jangling inside his pocket surprised him. Then he remembered his new cellphone and, hustling across the street, stepped inside a doorway. He pulled it out. “Darrell.”

“It’s Cassie.”

“Cassie? Hey.”

“Can we meet? I-I, uh—I need to talk to you.” She sounded scared.

The outside noises of the city crowded in on him and he put a finger in his other ear. “I’m in New York right now, getting ready to head back to Cape May,” he yelled into the phone. “It’ll take me more than two hours. Want to meet tomorrow morning?”

“No. Tonight,” she snapped. “I don’t think it can wait till tomorrow.”

Darrell glanced at his watch, calculating when he’d make it into town. “Okay. Where do you want to meet?”

“Burdette Tomlin.” When he hesitated, she added, “The hospital. On the Garden State Parkway, north of town.”

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah. It’s not me. It’s my…uh, friend, Vince.”

“Vince. Your buddy that has all the contacts?”

“Yeah.” He heard her clear her throat. “Somebody ran him down, tried to kill him.”

“What? What happened?”

“Don’t know the whole story yet. Tell you when I see you.”

Darrell checked his watch again. “That’ll be after eleven, at least.”

“Okay. See you then.” She hung up.

He stared at the now silent phone. Stashing it in his pocket, he hurried the rest of the way, but stopped when he got to the entrance to the garage. He decided he might as well call Erin, while he knew he had a connection and before he got back on the road. Moving inside the doorway, he pulled out the phone and punched in her number. Huddled against the wall, he took a few minutes to fill her in on his night, ending up with his failure to resolve anything about Josie’s situation.

She didn’t chide him. Instead, she said, “You okay?” He heard the concern in the question, grateful for it.

“I’m all right.” Then he told her about the surprise call from Cassie.

Through the phone speaker, Erin’s voice came through tight. “An accident? How did Cassie sound?”

“Rattled. She asked me to meet her. At the hospital. She’s keeping vigil for Vince and said she needed to talk to me tonight. Even though I won’t get there till almost midnight.”

Erin didn’t answer at first and then said, “This must’ve really shook her up. I’m glad you can be there for her. And Darrell?”

“Ye-e-s?” He held his breath.

“We think we have your job back here. I don’t want anything in Cape May to screw that up. Don’t take too many chances.”

“Got it.”

“And be careful on the drive.”

A few minutes later, he’d gotten his Corolla out of the garage and navigated his way through the congested city streets, once again glad for the printed Mapquest directions. Back on the highway, he released a big sigh and glanced over at Pogo.

“What do you say
