Chapter Fourteen

DRAVEN

Scarlett’s rejection hurt like hell.

Bonded mates didn’t reject one another. Hearts weren’t designed to withstand that amount of pain. With a heavy sigh and a dropping of my shoulders, I opened the windows to the fire escape and stepped out, balancing on the edge of the iron fencing, not caring who saw me.

A full moon stared back at me behind ghosting black clouds. For once, mistress moon’s face didn’t bring me the comfort I desperately needed. Only one woman could heal the bleeding wound across my heart.

A single leap took me to the next building, where I strolled along the narrow edge as easily as one walked the path of a park. I still couldn’t comprehend what had happened. Her easy rejection made no sense.

One moment their bodies and hearts were on the same wavelength. Scarlett had started surrendering to the feelings tugging at her, yielding her mouth so I could taste what I longed to since I had first seen her. My hands had held her gently, not demanding anything of her except her willingness to let me in. The next, something flashed across her eyes, and she showed me—not once, but twice.

I didn’t understand. Why did she battle me so hard? I could sense she felt for me. I stopped and stared out across the vast cityscape at the Empire State Building. Getting to higher elevations always helped to ease my mind. Using my great speed and dexterity, I launched myself from building top to building top, growing closer to my target.

“My Lord!” Lauren, the female vampire who accompanied me to the hostage scene, leaped alongside me. “Please, I need a moment!”

Scoffing, I raised the corner of my mouth. With a wave, I gestured toward one of the buildings nearest to both of us. We landed at the same time. I made it clear I wasn’t in the mood for the interruption, deepening my scowl and keeping a stand-offish posture, with my hands hidden deep in my pockets.

“Forgive me, Lord, but there is something you need to know. I did some checking on the company you asked me to.” She pulled out what looked like a small notebook, adjusting glasses she didn’t need but wore to keep up the professional look of her legal firm.

I kicked my toe into the grit of the roof, not saying a word. I needed this to be over with. My heart needed quiet to heal.

Lauren cleared her throat. “Yes, well, turns out Novogard’s CEO has quite the history.”

“For God’s sake, spit it out, woman. Can you not see I’m pissed?”

Lauren’s eyes widened. She took a step back.

I gnashed my fangs against my teeth. I hadn’t meant to snap at her or assert my dominance like that. “My apologies. Tonight has been... difficult, to say the least. Honestly, I don’t care to talk about Novogard or their CEO. Stick to the pertinent information only, please.”

Tapering my dominance when it came to Scarlett happened with the flip of a switch. I was used to getting what I wanted without having to work as hard as I had to with my mate.
