Chapter Thirteen (Hailey)

As the days passed, I found myself falling into a comfortable routine with Jackson, though he never made an advance. It was infuriating. After we’d kissed at his parents’ house, I was sure of what I felt and knew the attraction between us was mutual. Yet he never touched me except for the gentle kiss on the cheek or holding my hand.

I’d been single for years without having sex. Even then, my experience was limited to one ex-boyfriend in college. It hadn’t been an issue until recently when I found the idea popping into my mind more and more. There was nowhere in the house that I could go except my bedroom and not see Jackson, though that was the one place that I wanted him.

It wasn’t like we were avoiding each other. Each morning I would make our coffee, and by one, Jackson would be back inside for a simple lunch. Otherwise, our work took us in different directions while I settled my mother and worked on classes. Determined to make the year count, I would be up until late at night, still typing away.

Most nights, I would hear him slip into his room late into the evening and wonder if there was a woman on the side. By the following morning, my fears would abate as he watched me in the kitchen, his fingers lingering on my shoulders as he handed me a coffee cup or stood just perfectly so I’d have to brush against him to reach the fresh pot.

I certainly didn’t mind. If Jackson continued, I’d be begging him for more within a month.

When the sun woke me that morning, I scrambled to the kitchen and started coffee, well aware that I was already running late. The strap from my chemise slipped from my shoulder as Jackson stormed into the kitchen, his black boots shaking the floor as he walked.

“Morning,” he grumbled.

“Good morning, I thought you’d be out in the fields already. Didn’t you say something about Walker coming down with a new steer?”

He beamed and nodded. “I’m surprised you remembered with everything you’ve got going on.”

I shrugged. “I’m trying to keep up appearances. We don’t want the world to know what a sham this is, right?”

“Sure. Maybe it would help things if you didn’t keep bringing it up too, you know, for appearances.”

“Awe, what’s wrong, husband? Are you tired of married life already? I thought this is what you wanted.”

“I want my land, and you know it. I want what’s mine.” His eyes moved over my body.

I crossed my arms. “Oh, really? You want what’s yours? Well, why don’t you go find someone who wants to be a prize.”

“You know what I meant. But hey, if you want me to go find someone else, just let me know. Last time I checked, you seemed pretty happy here.”
