One of the cowboys galloped over to tip his hat in appreciation. “Thank you kindly, pardners,” he said. “You saved the herd. They’d have died if they’d gone over the ravine.”

“Us too,” Tom added. “But you’re welcome.”

The cowboy spurred his horse and rode off in a cloud of dust.

Tom and Zuma waited until the herd was well out of sight before moving on, just in case Tlaloc had any ideas about spooking them again. Tom realised that the rain god was not going to make Zuma’s quest easy. They would have to be careful and stay alert!

“We’d better get going,” he said, when the dusty cloud of the cattle drive had disappeared over the horizon. “We’ve lost a lot of time. The stagecoach will be getting close to Spring Creek.” He grinned at Zuma. “Think you can handle riding at a faster pace?”

Zuma winked. “I’ve got one word for you,” she said, gathering up her reins. “Giddyup!”
