Chapter Eight
So Close, Yet So Far Away
âOh! Garrett!â exclaimed Hannah.
âGarrett!â Noah echoed.
I couldnât believe we had forgotten him. It would definitely be a hard trip with Garrett.
âYes, Garrett,â said Leah.
âOh, but we have to go to Jerusalem. We just have to,â said Noah. âMaybe you could watch Garrett for us. We really have to see Jesus today!â
âNoah, we canât leave Garrett here in Jericho,â said Hannah.
âI could take care of him for a few days,â said Leah. âBut you cannot go to Jerusalem by yourselves. Three children walking that road, with no protection? With the robbers so bad this year? No. I am sorry to disappoint you. You must wait until you can find a caravan.â
We all sat there and didnât answer.
âWhy not go out and explore Jericho a little? You can see the palaces of King Herod up on the hill. I need to run some errands. We can go visit Zacchaeus later.â
So Hannah took Garrett and washed his face and we went out for a walk.
âNoah, what were you thinking?â I asked. âWe canât leave Garrett. What if weâre not back tomorrow morning?â
âWe definitely wouldnât be back tomorrow morning if we left for Jerusalem today,â said Hannah.
âGarrett is our responsibility,â I said.
âHeâs your responsibility,â said Noah. âIt was your turn to watch him.â
âNah?â said Garrett. Thatâs how he says Noahâs name. He looked confused.
Noah looked at Garrett, then looked away angrily.
âBut we are all here together now,â said Hannah.
âAnyway, you and Hannah said you would help me. Itâs not my fault this adventure happened in the middle of my half-hour turn of watching Garrett!â
âAnyway,â said Hannah. âThe robbers make things impossible, even if we didnât have Garrett. The three of us canât go by ourselves down a road with that kind of danger.â
We walked around a little, and we could see some of the palace buildings up on the hill. But it was too far for Garrett to walk, and he was too heavy to carry that far.
Noah walked around with a frown on his face. I could tell he was angry about not being able to go.
âNoah, itâs not going to do any good to act like this. We just have to accept it and hope that we can come again,â I said.
He didnât say anything, but just pouted even more.
âCaleb, why donât you and Noah go a little closer to the palaces and see those palm trees over there?â said Hannah. âI can stay here with Garrett for a while.â
âI donât want to see the stupid trees,â said Noah.
âFine, stay here with Hannah and the baby!â I said.
That made Noah come with me, as I knew it would.
âIf weâre not here when you come back,â said Hannah. âWeâll have gone back to Leahâs house, okay?â Garrett was picking up handfuls of dirt and throwing them.
There wasnât much to see, but soon we came upon a group of about eight or ten men. As we got closer, I saw they had two donkeys with bundles tied on their backs.
