Lieutenant Sayre started out taking the same route through Rion toward the Sheriff’s Office headquarters he’d taken every other day, but when he got to the turn for the parking lot, he kept driving. Instead, he followed the main road across the river to the West and back to Mrs. Westfall’s home just on the edge of town.

He’d spent the last twelve hours debating whether to pack up and return to Charleston or stay on as a rubber stamp to Hopewell County’s investigation. Ultimately, he’d decided he was going to do neither. Sayre couldn’t shake the idea that someone had gone to his superiors to stop him before he could dig further into what was going on. The last person he’d talked to before his boss called to chew him out was Franko. If Franko was trying to stop him, it probably meant the Vice Squad as a whole was trying to, as well. They clearly hadn’t wanted him talking any more to Mrs. Westfall—so that’s exactly what he was going to do.

When he got to Mrs. Westfall’s block, he drove past and circled back, looking for anyone watching the house or tailing him. He went down one block and doubled back, coming around to the Westfall’s street from the opposite side. From the intersection, he didn’t see any unmarked police cars or the black trucks the Vice Squad used.

Sayre turned on the street and drove down it slowly, looking into each curbside car for anyone sitting and watching. When he got to the end of the street, he circled back the opposite way and came back from the other side. It looked like he was in the clear.

He drove up to the house and pulled all the way into the driveway, obscuring the view of his car as much as he could from the road. Hopping out, Sayre walked around to the front door and knocked. When no one answered, he knocked again. The house was still and quiet. He peeked through the adjacent windows. Nothing. After knocking one more time, he cupped his hands to the door’s window to peer inside. Sayre could see straight down the hall to the back of the house. The back door was partially open.

Sayre followed the driveway to the back of the house. Attached to it was a modest deck with wood stairs leading down to the yard. At the top of those stairs was the open back door. He jogged up the stairs and knocked on the open door, leaning his head in.

“Mrs. Westfall,” he called, “are you home?”

No answer. He pushed the door open more and it whined with reluctance. He leaned further in.

“Mrs. Westfall? Amelia? It’s me, Lieutenant Sayre.” he said louder. “Are you in here?”

From his vantage point, the house looked in order. The only thing out of place was the open back door. That, and no one answering him.

“Mrs. Westfall? Or anyone in here? If you can hear me, it’s Lieutenant Sayre. Your back door is open here.
